President Bola Tinubu has extended his sympathies to the family of the late Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Chris Alli, and the Nigerian Army, over his passing on Sunday.

President Tinubu’s sympathies were contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, on Monday.

The late Major-General Alli was the Chief of Army Staff from 1993 to 1994 when he retired from service.

Mourning Alli, President Tinubu described his passing as a painful loss, saying he served his country faithfully.

The President said, “I condole with the Alli family and the Nigerian Army over the sad loss of the former Chief of Army Staff. He served his country with honour and retired meritoriously. May the Almighty God rest his soul and grant his family the fortitude to bear the huge void.”

Major-General Alli held other important positions in the Nigerian Army, such as Director of Military Intelligence, before his elevation to Chief of Army Staff. He was a respected officer.

He was very popular in the army then. Surprisingly he did not seem to be deeply involved in politics.

He played a huge role during the failed coup of Gideon Orkah. Babangida was brought into and secured in the guest house in Ikoyi by Chris Alli. Abacha also was secured by him during the coup.

May God grant his family the strength to bear the loss.

Very popular and powerful. Abacha retired him because he was too knows and very strong in the army. Most Generals in the military regime did not go into politics because they all achieved what they wanted in terms of power.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his family be comforted.

Gen Chris Alli was a pro-democracy fighter, even in uniform, and he paid dearly for it. However he retired with his head held high.

Galant!
