GARI-GARI- The Day Women Don't Come Outside For 24hrs In Ehugbo Land. by galileo180(m): 3:57pm On Nov 29, 2023
Despite the un- relentless effort of the Global community and the Nigerian government in the implementation of the Gender Policy which tends to protect the fundamental human rights of women and children. It is disheartening to know that some communities especially in Africa still engage in some barbaric acts which completely endangers the female gender. One of such communities is The Ancient City of Ehugbo ( The modern day Afikpo). Ehugbo is a small city situated at the southern part of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The city of Ehugbo has always been known for her rich cultural heritage and as the home of great Political Leaders, Academic Achievers, Captains of Industries etc.
Out of the numerous cultural heritage of this great land of Ehugbo, there is one that needs urgent intervention by the Global, National and every other actor(s) responsible for building a Nation devoid of gender discrimination – GARI-GARI. GARI-GARI is a ritual by the elderly custodians and initiates to officially mark the beginning of the Dry season in Ehugbo land. The Ogo cult serve as the Deity of the Ehugbo people. The GARI-GARI is celebrated in the month of November of every year and on that day, women and non initiates of the Ogo Cult are not allowed to come out of their homes for 24hrs and if violated, results in violent attack to the victim. There have been reported cases of abuse and violation of Fundamental human rights where the perpetrators hide under the guise of GARI-GARI.
The attention of the Global community and the Nigerian Government who are fully committed to building a nation devoid of gender discrimination, guaranteeing equal access to political, social and economic wealth creation opportunities for women and men has to be drawn about this harmful practice that endangers the lives of women for 24hours every year so that proper modification can be made to this religious ritual to allow women to go about their business for the day. There are many what if’s associated with GARI-GARI, some which includes;
What if a pregnant woman goes into Labour on a GARI-GARI.
What if there is a domestic accident that needs urgent medical intervention.
What if there is a career defining journey to be embarked.
What if a stranger meanders into Ehugbo Land on the day of GARI-GARI etc.
If promoting gender equality is globally accepted as a development strategy for reducing poverty levels among women and men, improving health and living standards and enhancing efficiency in public investments, then i strongly believe that 24hours is too much to disenfranchise women and children of their fundamental human rights.
