The Federal Government has directed universities to begin to admit more students into Medicine and Surgery as a strategy to address the shortage of manpower in the health sector occasioned by the relentless exodus of health workers abroad in what has been termed japa.

The Vice Chancellor, Nile University, Prof. Dili Dogo, revealed the Federal Government’s directive in a statement on Thursday by the varsity. The statement made available to The PUNCH quoted Dogo as saying Nile University would increase medical students’ admission by 100 per cent in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive to universities.

The VC said; "We graduated the first set of medical students this year and the Federal Government has requested an increase in the number of medical students to cater for the migration of doctors due to the “Japa’ syndrome.

To that effect, we are admitting 195 students into our medical programme, representing an increase of 100 per cent over that of last year.” Dogo said Nile University had made a heavy investment in infrastructure to guarantee qualitative training.

“In our pursuit to ensure sound educational competence for our students, Nile University has invested heavily in infrastructure. In addition to the existing academic infrastructure commissioned last year, we will be commissioning new facilities, including a STEM laboratory complex. This will be the only state-of-the-art, purpose-built STEM laboratory in the country.

“We are also constructing a medical simulation centre, the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa. This will bridge the gap and promote the best medical and clinical practices. When completed, it is going to house nine suites of high-definition mannequins that will provide the necessary skills for the training of medical students,” he added.

O ti late already. The gravity of this problem is now staring them in the face. A country where leaders go for health tourism abroad but thinks the dilapidated healthcare system back home will encourage or motivate health care workers to stay back.

Undergraduate medical students are already preparing for foreign exams in their final year. Once they are done with internship, they are off. Some don't even do NYSC again before moving.

Nigeria indeed is lacking medical personnel and the fear of the brain drain JAPA is the beginning of sound brain functioning now.

The problem isn't producing more medical doctors, rather it's about incentivising them to stay. Even if you graduate 50% more medical doctors than last year, that is simply more people that will be looking to migrate.

Fix the root cause - salaries, career progression, medical facilities, and make it inviting so more students would want to study medicine and also stay back to practice.

If you don't fix the main issues, having more doctors won't mean more will stay back. Although in a strange way, it could, but not at the scale FG expects. The more important thing is to address the reasons they leave.

Senseless evil government.

If you like, produce a million yearly, they'll still leave.

Until you increase staff remuneration generally, we can't progress.

JUST CHECK THE MINIMUM WAGE OF OTHER NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES, AND YOU'LL BE MARVELLED AT HOW BACKWARD AND POOR NIGERIA IS.

MY COLLEAGUE, A DOCTOR RECEIVING 280K MONTHLY HERE IN NIGERIA LEFT FOR GAMBIA LAST YEAR, NOW HIS SALARY IS NOTHING LESS THAN $2500 MONTHLY.

Way to go. Maybe not.

We will just simply have more doctors to supply to Europe and America.
No matter how much water you continue to pour in a pot, so far the fire under it burns, the water will keep evaporating away. Time is the deciding factor.

Fix the country and what we'd have is reverse Japa.

This kind of information is capable of creating problem for us at the international arena.

You don't wake up and start producing doctors. They have to undergo training for them to become better doctors.

Dishing out this type of information may give impression that we are after quantity rather than quality.

Instead, government on her part should create more medical departments and employ qualified teachers that will guide this student on the necessary rudimentary processes.

You mean "Produce more Quacks"! tongue

Getting quality doctors and healthcare professionals isn't a fire-brigade process of batch admissions and qualifications...!

That's why serious nations do all in their power to keep their most needed professionals, and even go as far as luring more from corrupt and stupid third world nations.

Una go get sense by force...!

That's not your business

Igbos can't be producing doctors that would take peanuts yet we re not respected

North West and North East health and educational sectors would collapse if igbos leave there

From the last stats IMO alone produce as much doctors das North East and North West combined
