Criminals Using Fake Presidential Number Plates To Smuggled Vehicles Says Custom by Acechief: 11:14am On Dec 08, 2023
Chedi Wada, the Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone “B” in Kaduna, expressed concern over smugglers resorting to using fake presidential number plates for transporting vehicles across the country.

He revealed that these criminals are also employing counterfeit plates from various state and local governments, MDAs, Emirate Councils, and other government institutions.

Wada shared this information during a courtesy call with Bashir Rabe-Mani, the Zonal Manager of the News Agency of Nigeria, Kaduna Zonal Office.

He emphasized Customs’ commitment to thwarting smugglers’ attempts to deceive authorities using such tactics, stating that well-trained personnel can easily identify fake numbers.

Expressing discontent, Wada stated, “It is saddening how vehicle smugglers are ridiculing the apex seat in the country by using presidential fake plate numbers on newly smuggled cars to deceive customs.”

He underscored the importance of respecting the presidency and denounced those engaging in such deceptive practices.

Wada disclosed that Customs had impounded numerous vehicles with fake number plates, including those claiming affiliation with local governments, ministries, and various government institutions.

He reiterated the service’s responsibility in suppressing anti-smuggling activities, ensuring revenue generation, facilitating trade, and implementing governmental policies.

Highlighting the media’s role in creating awareness, Wada emphasized the need for the public to understand customs rules and regulations.

He clarified that, according to the Customs Act, the service can act on intelligence, entering premises to seize contraband without prior notification.

Wada urged Nigerians to be informed about customs operations and encouraged interest in customs jobs.

Since assuming duty six weeks ago, Wada reported impactful seizures and investigations, emphasizing the system’s effectiveness.

He called for continuous collaboration with the media and appreciated the News Agency of Nigeria for its visit, assuring ongoing cooperation.

In response, Rabe-Mani acknowledged the purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relationship between NAN and NCS.

He sought ongoing collaboration to successfully combat smuggling and other economic sabotage within the zone.
