Seven Ogun Communities Protest Bad Roads, Gully Erosion by TajuDEENaMao: 4:37am On Dec 12, 2023
The residents of Araromi-Ilugun-Itoko and six other communities in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State on Monday, protested the terrible state of the road linking their communities as well as the huge gully erosion which had not only destroyed the road but also threatened to sack the communities whenever it rained.

The residents during the protest were armed with placards bearing messages such as, “Gov Dapo Abiodun, come to our aid at Araromi-Ilugun-Itoko”, “We can’t access our houses again due to gully erosion”, “We can’t afford another rainfall under this condition” among others.

The residents raised the alarm of an imminent flooding disaster and landslides which would affect no fewer than 50 houses if the problem of the gully erosion is not fixed before the next rainy season begins.

The affected communities are: Araromi Ilugun-Itoko, Victory Estate, Surulere, Peaceland, Ilugun Central, Sunshine Estate and Abata CDA.

Speaking with our correspondent, the Chairman of Araromi-Ilugun-Itoko Community Development Association, Mr Okuneye Alaba Ezekiel, explained that the challenge started around June.

Okuneye said, “The gully erosion is really threatening the existence of the foundation of our communities. It started in June this year and it has become a source of serious concern to the residents. In fact, we believe that disaster looms should nothing be done on this terrible gully if the next rainfall should begin.

“The volume of the water that is coming to Araromi Ilugun-Itoko CDA resulted into this gully erosion and as communities, we don’t have the capacity to handle this huge challenge.

“We are calling on the state government and particularly the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Environment to come to our rescue because if another rainy season should start, there will be a serious problem in this area.

“We have about seven communities accessing this road and the gully erosion has destroyed the road. People can no longer drive to their houses, even to trek to their various houses is a serious challenge as a result of the gully erosion.

“We are calling on the government to come to our rescue because if another rainy season should set in, about 50 houses will be affected and seven communities will also be affected.

“Before now, we had been appealing to government to come to our rescue, but our voice has not been heard yet.

“We want the government to help us to construct drainage that will channel the water into a nearby river down the community. It has to be a very big drainage looking at the havoc that the the gully has caused, but if that is not done a greater disaster looms.

“We are appealing to Governor Abiodun as well as the Federal Ministry of Environment to please arise and help us. We don’t want to wait until we begin to lose lives and property. Already, our economic activities are badly affected. We plead for all the help that we can get before the next rainy season begins.”

Ogun state has continued to be in the news for reasons connected to lack of good condition of living despite having a good economic advantage bcoz of it's proximity to Lagos. Nigerians are the real cause of their problems, they sentimentally vote for fools and expect miracle...

Hehehe.

Ogun state governors is one of the most useless governor I have seen in Nigeria. With all the money he generates from the state, the federal allocations and loans,he has nothing to show for it.

The masses are another funny people. You see as they are protesting,if the governor contest election today, they will vote for him again. Suffering and smiling.
And I don't want to hear it's poverty that makes them to vote for them,I don't believe that anymore. Is it the cup's of rice and oil that will make them rich or sustain them for 4 years?.

So,, what should Anambra People do??

These nincompoops should go and fix their neighborhoods by themselves.
Else their houses will start falling into gullies.

If Anambra people had mastered the methods of preventing erosions by themselves even before the intervention of the government, then a lot of other ravaged communities should borrow a leaf from them.

Are these the members of 6 villagers in the west?

Have they also abandoned their bushes and brown roofs to join the land owners in Lagos?

Something about this ecological funds..

Desertification and desert-encroachment in the north had caused lots of states in the north to receive massive ecological funds..

But then,, the funds all got embezzled in the end.
Nothing had been done, and the desert continues to encroach..
More money being pumped there still.

Proximity to Lagos is never a guarantee of good life. Even Lagos itself is shythole except few places.
Good life is exertion of energy to make money, tackling your leaders to bring development closer to you. But a typical yorubaman doesn't care about his dilapidated street where he lives as long as "world class" road is somewhere where the political thieves in his state live

I give it to the north.
Most of their roads are Very good.... within and outside the city. Dual/double lanes everywhere and less potholes

Although I know that the federal allocation is unfairly and highly given to northern states that contribute little to nothing to the federal government

Even the structures... buildings... roads... facilities in the universities and higher institutions of learning in the north are far better than what you find in the south, east and West.

Ogene001:

Very low rainfall in the north
High or low rainfall 🌧️☔... if a state government wants to work and help its people natural phenomenon isn't an excuse.

That the whole states in the north are all turning to desert,, do you ever see anyone making jokes about it?

That the flash-flooding in Lagos whenever there is rains is on another level,, do you ever see anyone make jokes with it.??

Agbado-Opeilu road and Adiyan gasline are the worst Roads in Ogun State. The aformentioned places are less than 1km to Lagos and it seem those places are one of the ungovern area in Ogun State yet have huge number of residents.

Dapo Abiodun, ....you see your life 🤷. Dapo knew nothing to governing his house talk less of a State. he was just fortunate, and yet he isn't ready to learn. Well, as I've always said, your name will go down in history as the worst governor that ever passed through Ogun State. And karma will serve you right at a due time too.

Oloriburuku governor.

Lots of people make fun of the flooding of Lagos especially on Nairaland. The flooding is one of the major reason the government of Lagos is demolishing houses built on canals and some wetlands.
