All the motor parks within Ibadan metropolis will be merged into three from the end of next month, in an effort to ease traffic gridlock and restore the scenic beauty of the Oyo State capital.

A N250 million contract for the upgrade of two out of the three motor parks, where the transport operators in the capital city would henceforth be plying their trade, has been signed by the state government.

Vehicles plying the Lagos route and currently using the Beere, Idi-Arere, Molete and Challenge axis as their loading bays will be moved to Podo area of old Lagos Road, while those around Iwo-Road interchange will relocate to a motor park under construction along SDP Road, opposite Wema Bank close to Gbagi area.

The third park sited in Ojoo area of Ibadan is in the pipeline.

This decision, among others, was reached at the weekly state executive council meeting held on Monday.

Briefing newsmen at the end of the meeting, the Chief of Staff to the state governor, Dr Adeolu Akande, said the decision was taken in the context of restoring sanity in the state transport system.

While providing a breakdown of the project, the state Commissioner for Works and Transport, Alhaji Yunus Akintunde, explained that the modern parks, which would be completed within 30 days, would be furnished with conveniences like shops, clinics, borehole and others.

Alhaji Akintunde stated that the new initiative would go a long way in maintaining the hard-won peace since the advent of the current administration, while also freeing the metropolis of traffic snarl.

He disclosed that a task force and mobile courts to try those contravening traffic codes would soon be unveiled as a means of ridding the city of indiscriminate parking of vehicles along the roads.
