The 10-man National Working Committee of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) decided at its meeting today to disqualify the governor of Bayelsa state, Timipre Sylva from participating in the upcoming party primaries to select a flag-bearer for the party.

The NWC met privately for several hours at the Legacy House which serves as the campaign headquarters for PDP presidential candidates.

PDP sources told SaharaReporters that the NWC moved today's meeting to a secret location to avoid protest by politicians loyal to Mr. Sylva.

The meeting lasted till 8:00 PM Nigerian time after which it moved to the Presidential Villa to brief President Goodluck Jonathan. Mr. Jonathan reportedly gave a stamp of approval to the decision of the NWC to exclude Mr. Sylva but the group was confronted with the dilemma of how to go about announcing the disqualification of Mr. Sylva as a screening committee set up by the party had earlier cleared Sylva and given him a certificate of clearance.

Sylva fortunes took a different turn last night when a committee composed by the PDP to look into appeals from those disqualified decided to disqualify Sylva acting on a petition that claimed that the governor was engaged in fraud.

After the news was broken on SaharaReporters Mr. Sylva aides vigorously denied the reports but accepted that Sylva had appeared before the appeal committee to discuss his qualification from the primaries.

Contacted tonight Sylva's aides feigned ignorance about the latest decision of the NWC. Mr. Ola Doife told SaharaReporters that no body of the party has the inherent right to disqualify his principal.

Another meeting of the NWC reportedly commenced at 10:00 PM Nigerian time to explore strategies for communicating the decision to Sylva and his supporters.

Most of us dont understand Nigerian politics. Ben Bruce was drafted into the race for the singular reason to justify sylvia's disqualification when the time comes.

Its already happening. Look beyond the surface.
