It usually happens during winter period. Then during summer, around 8-9 pm everywhere will still be bright like day. Funny climate.

You don't need to visit other countries to experience this because right here in the northern part of Nigeria it gets dark as from past 5pm from November till January.

I am in the North currently Jalingo to be precise and this is my 3rd year of experiencing harmattan. It starts getting dark from 5pm. I made a video call with my parents living in the south south a few days ago at just a few minutes to 6pm they were surprised to see that it was dark already.

a neighbour of mine who worked in Katsina told me it is the same over there. This is someone who is from River state. May be you didn't take note during your service year.

Technically speaking it's 6pm Nigeria time because they moved the clock back by one hour 1st of November. Although, it would continue to get dark early till about 3pm as the winter advances.

It's actually like that in many countries, that's why some countries have different time-zones.

The US has multiple time-zones, so does Russia, Canada and other countries. So, when it's dark in one part of the country and it's not in another part, they most likely fall in different time-zones and should accordingly adjust their clocks like other nations do.

Amount of sunshine depends on distance north/south of the equator. Time zones are based on east/west positions. In the US the State Maine and Florida are both in the Eastern Time Zone but Maine is way North and Florida way south. Maine sunset today was 4:09 pm while that in Florida was 5:37 pm. Florida js closer to the equator and will not experience much shift in sunset and sunrise as Maine... neither will it have temperature shifts as Maine. Katsina is like Maine and Lagos like Florida.

December 21 .... shortest period of daylight... earliest sunset. June 21 ... longest period of daylight. Every day going forward until June 21 ... the sun will set a bit later.... if one is located north of the equator. If south ... each day will become shorter. Canada..... north ....winter... short days. Australia.... south .... summer ... longgg days.
