Railway Debt Servicing Exceeds Revenue By 1,200% – Report by treesun: 8:12am On Dec 28, 2023
Railway debt servicing cost exceeded revenue by 1,208.5 per cent in the first half of 2023, an analysis of debt service documents has shown.

In the first half of 2023, the government spent $38.59m (N29.98bn at N777/$) on servicing debt for loans obtained to build the Nigeria Railway Modernisation Project (Idu Kaduna Section) and Nigeria Railway Modernisation Project( Lagos – Ibadan Section).

At that time frame, the total railway revenue was N2.29bn according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics. In the first quarter of 2023, a total of 441,725 passengers travelled via the rail system, a 53.65 per cent increase from the 953,099 reported in the corresponding quarter of 2022.

In terms of revenues, the NBS said, “In terms of revenue generation, N768.44m was received from passengers over the period, lower by 63.02 per cent relative to N2.08bn in the same quarter of the previous year. Similarly, N181.27m was collected in Q1 2023 as revenue from goods/cargos, up by 99.28 per cent from N90.96m received in Q1 2022.

“In addition, other receipts amounted to N34.17m, indicating a decline of 41.02 per cent in Q1 2023, from the N57.92m collected in Q1 2022.”

By Q2, the number of passengers travelling by rail increased to 474,117 passengers and the volume of goods/cargo transported rose to 56,029 tons.

Commenting on revenues, the statistics body stated, “In terms of revenue generation, N1.10bn was received from passengers during the reference period, showing an increase of 83.88 per cent from the N598.74m recorded in the same quarter of the previous year.

“Similarly, N188.03m was collected from goods/cargos conveyed in Q2 2023, up by 105.04 per cent from N91.70m received in Q2 2022. In addition, other receipts amounted to N18.74m, indicating a decline of 62.31 per cent in Q2 2023 from the N49.73m collected in Q2 2022.”

Low revenue from railway services has been attributed to insecurity and ticketing issues (with the paper tickets still a thing in the country). Recently, the House of Representatives decried low revenue generation from the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

This observation, which was blamed on ticket racketeering, was shared when the Managing Director of the NRC, Fidet Okhiria, appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Finance recently during the 2024–2026 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper interactive session.

The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, recently disclosed that e-ticketing would boost railway revenue in the country.

He said, “The essence of E-ticketing is to make it easy for our passengers to buy tickets, for security purposes and to stop ticket racketeering. it will also ensure the security of our passengers onboard the train and avoid racketeering.”

A recent The PUNCH report stated that the Federal Government intends to make N7.01bn from train passengers by 2025.

Welcome to Buhariconomics.. Instead of building infrastructures in areas that will guarantee traffic and revenue, they went to construct railway connecting Niger

Difrent:

If only you know the volume of trade between Nigeria and Niger you won't write this rubbish. Niger is landlocked. A rail system connecting them to the ports is a very viable economic project.
Because of access to sea Ethiopia may have to invade and occupy either Eritrea or Somaliland....that shows you the essence of a country have direct access to the sea

Pray Tell, why don't you enlighten us with your load of superior knowledge on how the railway to Maradi Niger is more economically viable than an intra city line connecting the Southern parts and northern parts

Developers were not involved in the railway project, that's why it's running at a loss.

I posted that people mount train rooftops from Lagos to Ibadan despite the cheap train prices and the mods are trying to silence me. You abandoned viable eastern railway routes only to build them in Ibadan where absolutely nothing happens.

They left the railway corridor that will bring massive revenue to build rail where poor masses reside.
How many people travel to lagos from Ibadan in a week and how many of them can afford rail fare? They prefer combi buses that pack them like sardine where they pay less.

How can you build rail from the North to the North or from Lagos Ibadan and you expected to service your debt with it....

Ofcoz we know that running a rail from east to Lagos will generate enough money but they want to reduce the number of Igbos residing in Lagos.

Also, routing rails along insurgent areas where Boko Haram can easily attack passengers will reduce its services to avoid becoming a victim.

And with corrupt people embezzling the funds generated and reporting lower figures.

Bad investments yet they are quick to choke the southern masses with the "government has no business running businesses" line.
When it involves using money from region A to develop region B(their region), they suddenly want to do business and even at a loss.

Despite the ridiculously cheap tickets prices, they still can't afford it rather they mount train rooftops from Ibadan to Lagos. When they reach Lagos, they'll be claiming landlord online from their shelter under the bridge.
Is the picture for real? I doubt it is from Nigeria.

There are several media reports that showed that the eastern railway line was the most lucrative in the country. There's a reason why the most successful transport companies are owned by the Igbos.

Yet, due to ethnic bigotry, Buhari ignored it to develop railways in regions where people rarely travel. How on earth did he think he was going to recover the loan used to finance that project?

That's how clueless leaders wreck this country. If you complain, they call you a wailer or child of hate. Yet, the country keeps getting worse.

Re: Railway Debt Servicing Exceeds Revenue By 1,200% – Report by socialmediaman: 9:02am On Dec 28, 2023
Summary:

1. In the first half of 2023, government generated only about N1.8 billion naira, but spent N29 billion on debt servicing
2. in Q1 of 2023, only about 450,000 people traveled with trains, compared to 960,0000 people who traveled the same period in 2022

Do you need a soothsayer to tell you that at this rate, the railway system is headed towards shutdown due to corruption and laziness of the leadership? Does Nigeria Airways ring a bell?

Nigeria is a funny country. Let us start with the cost of the project, which would have been over inflated, shoddily prepared rate of return on investment. Most of the revenues find their ways into private pockets because no e-tickets. Also there should have been Port-Harcourt, Onitsha-Benin-Lagos and Abuja-Lagos routes, these will be more viable. grin grin grin grin angry

The money comes from South South and South East to repay these loans meanwhile none of the projects is located there.
You build railways in areas with little business activities and it cannot pay for itself. This is poor planning based on sentiments

No big deal, public transport particularly rail is almost always subsidized and remains one of the most productive and efficient deployment of government subsidies.

Then why take loan to do it?

who is going to pay back, is it not taxing the citizens more ?

Lol, you left a lucrative Lagos to East route and took a heavy loan to build rail along a corridor of people that hardly travel and can afford the fare, what were you expecting? If care is not taken, the rail will collapse in few years time or we continue to waste resources subsiding a waste

An average traveler to the East paid 40k in transport from Lagos, compare that to someone traveling along the rail corridors who will complain if he's charged 5k transport. Who among these travellers deserves a rail and can afford it?

cheesy cheesy cheesy

The other day I said they borrowing huge amount of money to build these trains is just waste of money for a country like Nigeria they came for me.

The truth of the matter is that Infrastructure alone do not build a country. And when you want to build infrastructure,it must be infrastructure that pulls the people out of poverty. Infrastructure that targets the Economy

Now debt servicing alone exceeds 1200. Haba

Obasanjo did not take one single loan to fix telecommunications and the banking sector yet none of APC so called infrastructure makes 10 percent of what we get from those two. Those two sectors changed our lives completely

The funniest part of it is that, about 95 percent of Nigerians living in the Lagos/Ibadan axis won't board that train till they die.

The APC is like that Man that his children are going hungry and he couldn't even pay their school fees, but he tells them to chill that they should not worry that he is building a 15 storey building. grin. Maybe na House them go chop.

E.G. Aregbesola that took all humugous loans building white elephant projects and left the people of Osun in poverty and misery
