ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, was established on May 28, 1975, with the signing of the Treaty of Lagos by 15 West African countries. The primary objectives of ECOWAS include promoting economic integration and cooperation among member states to foster development in the West African region. Over the years, ECOWAS has played a key role in addressing political instability, conflicts, and economic challenges in West Africa. It has implemented various programs to enhance trade, free movement of people, and regional peace and security. ECOWAS has also been involved in conflict resolution efforts, deploying peacekeeping missions in troubled areas and facilitating negotiations to resolve conflicts. The organization has evolved to include 15 member states, and its headquarters is located in Abuja, Nigeria. Throughout its history, ECOWAS has made strides in promoting regional integration, but it has also faced challenges related to political and economic disparities among member states. Despite these challenges, ECOWAS continues to be a crucial regional organization in West Africa. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are: 1. Benin 2. Burkina Faso 3. Cape Verde 4. Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) 5. Ghana 6. Guinea 7. Guinea-Bissau 8. Liberia 9. Mali 10. Niger 11. Nigeria 12. Senegal 13. Sierra Leone 14. Togo 15. The Gambia |
