Nigeria is terribly under-policed.

Just 300,000 policemen for a population of 230 million people!

It makes no sense.

I read somewhere we have 1 policeman per 6000 people, or something silly like that.

That is totally unacceptable.

Of course, state police is the best option by most people's analyses, to end insecurity, but if the FG is too scared to allow that, then for goodness' sakes, BEEF UP THE POLICE SIZE AS A MATTER OF IMMEDIACY.

By now there should be well-publicised HEAVY RECRUITMENT DRIVES for police officers, with vastly improved salaries and equipment including vehicles.

A MINIMUM 1 MILLION POLICE OFFICERS is what is required to end this nonsense called insecurity, and we must do it NOW!!!!!!

And the 300... Personnel are extremely corrupt.

If FG are to increase the force by numbers and salary packages, then they should put all measure in place to combat corruption in the system, from the Last corporal to AIG, because the more the Eagles multiply the more the worries of mother chicken.

Peace

Spare me this crap.

The reason you are walking free on the streets now and safe in your house is because of Nigerian policemen.

If you think it is that your silly gate or fence that is protecting you from armed robbers, you be real fool.

Those policemen patrol the streets at night in vehicles, risking their lives to keep you safe behind that your ajebota fence and gate.

Since you know you are right, go and meet Tinubu for discussion and implementation.

300, 000 ba?

Now out of that small size, 150,000 has been distributed to protect high profile citizens who are not up to 10,000 leaving the remaining 150k to police the rest 220k population. And any sane person wants me to believe that Nigeria is an alright country.

How do you guys even think self?

How will they be paid?

Police can’t stop crime..

Nigeria is not under policed..

It’s corruption, plus some of the officers are guiding the big men..

Police can’t prevent crime, they can only arrest the perpetrators..

Make una understand how this world they work..

The only way for Nigeria to be crime free is if we imbibe principles, truth and honesty..

Secondly having a big police force won’t grow our economy, instead let’s have a big force of manufactures.

Na your type Dey give government wrong advice..

Crime is high in Nigeria cos we have imbibed a c
national criminal culture, plus lots of over due injustice..

The police can’t fix this..

No worry your self..

We need to be trained to be principled, have will power, fight against operation and evil, etc..

Remember police can’t prevent crimes most times..

Na we Nigeria suppose change from our evil ways, using force won’t work..

Then corruption need to end..

Not 100% correct..

It’s because boys don choose peace..

Or they have been warned by Men.

Societies are mood peacefull cause of the presence of police, societies are peaceful because civilized men choose peace…

For Nigeria to be peaceful we have to be civilized…

We too local..

Our reasoning is too poor.

We hate logic, wisdom, etc.

In a society we’re smokers, drug adults and cultist are seen as the big boys, we have long way to go.

We need proper reorientation not more police..

Stop reasoning backward Op. We have enough corrupt officers on our streets that need to be weeded out. The day intelligence becomes a factor in recruitment, a few police officers will do the job and the nation will become safe. grin

The old crooks among them will simply show the new intakes the way things are done here and you will end up with a large mob of salaried henchmen.

Nigeria is really not "under policed" with the proliferation of " security agencies" in multifarious uniforms in the landscape.

It is the absence of shared intelligence and outright working across purposes that creates the illusion of an underpoliced state.

There are several agencies with powers to arrest. Infact, the citizens also have a constitutional power to arrest criminals and handover to the police.

I want to believe that crimes and criminality seems to be on the ascendance because justice is not being swiftly dispensed with or seemed to be done in some cases.

Even if you increase the sheer number of personnel without an effective judicial system, we will only be approaching a hydra headed monster from one front.

For those tinkering with the idea of state police, remember it was so in the beginning. Then there was even the native police. All had to be scrapped for this unitary system because of their high handedness and were willing tools for politicians.

What do you think would have happened if some state governors had a police under their call in the last election? You guess is as good as mine.

The police as presently constituted needs to leverage on technology to act as a "force multiplier" .
CCTV cameras, drones, and automated alarm systems can effectively and efficiently do the work of a thousand police men.

Also, deploying a large chunk of the meager police personnel to guard and escort duties will not help with crime prevention and may even aid and abet crimes if such VIPs are criminaly minded.

Good points, but I don't think we're quite ready to rely on CCTV and so on, especially in relation to the attacks in rural areas. I think we underestimate the effects of good ol' Boots on the Ground in terms of police numbers.

Flood an area with police and see how fast the so-called bandits disappear into the woods.

It will be very difficult to create the type of synergy you envisage between the police and other security agencies. Their operating cultures and operational capacities are so disparate.

True that CCTV would not be feasible in all locations. The use of drones to police a community is even more cheaper and effective than a thousand boots on the ground.

With bandits notifying communities of their coming, drones can police such communities 24/7 and can even serve as a deterrence to attacks as the terrorist will know that they can be followed up to their bases from the air.

Infact, an armed drone can do more damage than boots on the ground. The mishap in Tudun Biri by our military readily comes to mind.

Technology is a veritable force multiplier at this time when the government is lean on funds.
