British Looted Benin Bronzes from the Palace of the Oba of Benin, Dated from the 10th Century, Resurfacing In Europe!

The British invaded and burned down the great city of Benin in 1897. They also burned the massive palace and looted its Bronze treasures, which are now resurfacing around the world, from Germany to Sweden to Holland to USA and Canada!

It is widely believed that numerous Benin Bronzes are still hidden in vaults in major European capitals, with many sold in private auctions for millions of dollars.

The Benin Empire is recognised universally as one of Africa's greatest pre-colonial civilisations.

That @ bolded is incorrect and therefore false. Benin has no history that dates back to the 10th century. You may consult all the credible historical records to confirm, not 'tales by moonlight stories' by those who had tried in vain to review true historical facts o.

FG must sustain the effort to recover these precious works of arts o. Thank you for sharing OP.

Technically, it is actually OLDER than the 10th century,

''The Benin Kingdom was "one of the oldest and most developed states in the coastal hinterland of West Africa". It grew out of the previous Edo Kingdom of Igodomigodo around the 11th century AD, and lasted until it was annexed by the British Empire in 1897.''

Please stop arguing needlessly first. Go and read very credible sources , not one freely edited 'history' on wikipedia page.

It's on wikipedia you will see people type funny claims, very funny claims like how the Bini packed sand from Bini and dumped it in Lagos when there are several homogeniously Yoruba communities in between Lagos and Benin and account even a departed Bini monarch account that there were 100% Yoruba people they met in Lagos.

But for the advent of internet, by now they would have continued with the inaccurate history that the Bini monarch never leaves Benin and continue to deny that he has no sacred permanent resting place for his head in Ile Ife, Osun state.

It's you talking crap.

Benin existed centuries before Eweka 1.

''The kingdom of Benin began in the 900s when the Edo people settled in the rainforests of West Africa.''

- BBC
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z3n7mp3#z8rbg7h

''Edo oral history indicates that the kingdom was founded in around the 10th century and was ruled by a dynasty of kings titled Ogiso, who first established a court in the region of Benin City. The Ogisos also established the beginnings of the palace craft guilds, which led to the development of the kingdom’s unique artistic traditions in ivory, wood and metal.

In about 1200 CE, the Ogisos are said to have been replaced by the current dynasty, when Prince Oranmiyan from the neighbouring kingdom of Ife was invited to take the throne at Benin.''

Ife neighbouring to Benin? Smh. Dey play.

Instead of you to go and read very credible scholarly work like G.Akin Akinola’s ‘The Origin of the Eweka Dynasty of Benin: A Study in the Use and Abuse of Oral Traditions (1976).

“These works from Benin are equal to the very finest examples of European casting technique,” wrote Professor Felix von Luschan, formerly of the Berlin Ethnological Museum. “Benvenuto Celini could not have cast them better, nor could anyone else before or after him. Technically, these bronzes represent the very highest possible achievement.”

Who is he? Never heard of him. And showing the book cover of his work proves nothing.

You forgot to mention the link to the National Museum Scotland I posted which said the kingdom was founded in the 10th century.

And it's wrong to dismiss evidence that doesn't correspond to your claim as 'cut and paste'. wink

bini, oyo and igala kingdoms. these artefacts says lots about how advanced and civilised bini people were before the invasion of the brits, today most of the documents of smiths containing secret (ancient African wisdom)to iron smelting are all gone, indeed its true that it was fear of our advancement that forced these invasions, through colonialism they control our development, this is why since then our growth have been stagnated.i hope one day Africans would wake up and understand the power of unity in our diversity.

I knew you were gonna quote one of your Yoruba Revisionist who were blinded by hate and jealousy to write falsehood about the Edo people.

So we should believe one Akinola's version of Edo history than the one told by Edo people themselves?

You all can keep quoting and believing their version, it wont change the truth about Edo.

I know that we live in a hypocritical society where we claim we can do things we obviously cannot do.

We often wail about how the Europeans stole those ancient artifacts to display them in their museums, but we know we don't even know how to maintain those items if we were to recover them.

So, the best bet is to leave the artifacts with them and ask for annual loyalties for having them in their museums. When we have a serious country, we will ask them to return the artifacts.

That guy is Yoruba. They suffer from pain and superiority complex. When other tribes outshine their tribe, they are out to fight back. Oyo, Ife empire has no international reputation, artifact or evidence to show today. But the story tellers think Yoruba should have had a greater empire since they are more in population. He is trying to destroy the work of ogiso dynasty to pace way for their regular oba is Yoruba word and eweka is Yoruba. The guy is desperate to ascribe the accomplishments of the great people of igodomigodo to a Yoruba oriminla. Igodomigodo was already a great empire before oduduwa was born. So, historically, all these Yoruba tales are just like attachees by force. He wants you to believe the twisted writeup of an ethnic Yoruba historian, but at the same time rubbishing Benin oral tradition and indigenous Benin historians. If not foolishness, how can a Yoruba man who lived outside Benin empire, who was born 1700 years after igodomigodo was created, who was an illiterate until the white man taught him how to read or write just 200 years ago, How could he possibly want to be a historian and authority on issues that happened 1500 years before he was born? Something his own father's and ancestors knew nothing about? And he is throwing under the bus those whose ancestors are directly responsible for creating the artifact and empire? As typical with any city, cities attract migrant villagers who come for trade and economic reason and security. Yorubas were drawn to Benin empire for trade, security and economic reasons. Over time, Yorubas exported their gods, voodoos there and intermarried with the locals. That's what gave birth to the itsekiri tribes and some language mixup. That doesn't make Edo people yoruba
