The Dosunmu Onikoyi Royal Ruling House, yesterday, announced and presented Prince Abdul-Ganiu Onikoyi, as its candidate to be appointed as Onikoyi of Ikoyi and Imobaland.

Secretary of the Dosunmu Onikoyi Ruling House, Prince Ademola Onikoyi, formally presented Prince Abdul Onikoyi as the family’s choice for the next Oba, at the Family House, Enuowa, Idumota, Lagos Island.


According to Ajas Onikoyi, Ganiu Onikoyi was elected, after polling six of the eight votes available among the eight family lineages for the preferred candidate.

Providing details of how the family’s choice was made, the family secretary said: “For the purpose of selection of just one out of the six aspirants to be the next Oba Onikoyi from the legally bounded Dosunmu Onikoyi royal ruling house, the head of each of the eight lineages bound to form the elders forum.

“Each head was mandated to constantly disseminate informations to members of their lineage on projects being addressed.”

He added that all the heads of the eight lineages were informed that election of the family’s choice was for December 23, 2023.

“At the end of the day, the Fagbemi Ayanmi lineages, which are five, concluded their voting, with four of them voting for Ganiu Onikoyi, while one vote was not determined.

“As a result of the absence of two heads of lineages from Agneti branch and the absence of one head, the voting process was shifted to December 30, 2023, for the Agbetis to exercise their rights.

“On December 30, 2023, the two heads of two lineages from the Agbetis, who were physically present concluded by giving their votes to Ganiu Onikoyi.

“The import of this scenario depict that Ganiu Onikoyi scored six out of the eight possible votes from the eight lineages. He was, therefore, unanimously elected as the next Oba of Onikoyi and Moba lands from the Dosunmu Onikoyi Royal ruling house.”

Speaking to newsmen after his announcement, Prince Ganiyu Onikoyi, promised to unite the family as the division has slowed down the individual and collective development of the family.

According to Ganiyu, “I am humbled and grateful for the honor of being selected as the Oba-elect of the Dosunmu Onikoyi Royal Ruling House.

“Please allow me to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to Almighty God for allowing us to witness this significant moment.

“We must also acknowledge and honor the efforts of our ancestors who have worked tirelessly to bring us to this point.
