Universities have been the bedrock of Innovations in modern society, but in Nigeria it seems to be the opposite.
Reading through Social media have observed alot of young graduates complain of wasting their precious time in the universities.
Others have suggested that learning high demanding skills is far better than going to the university.
Skills like tailoring, plumbing, IT related skills, etc. ( Which are very good skills indeed).
Most have also embraced the idea of starting up Businesses (Entrepreneurship) which is very crucial for developing economies.
The argument lies
What if over 20 million young people acquire the same skills who will pay who ?.

Will every young person be to manage and run a business successfully to the point of employing others?.

I did a little research and I discovered that 80% of technologies we use daily all started from university research
STEM cells
Cancer treatment
AI
Etc..

Is the government or the universities..?
Do we need to revisit our educational system
Since the western pattern is not working?..
Can we design our own African educational system?

Blame the government because the teeth cannot be healthy when the mouth is unclean. Top government officials put their candidates in charge of public schools and overlook the candidates' misconducts.

There are private universities doing well in the same Nigeria.

Lack of funds and infrastructure. We prefer the short cuts. Wait for white or asian man to create something and then we import.

Our current educational curricular is in dire need of a total overhaul to meet present realities and challenges.

We cannot continue to draw an annotated diagram of the digestive system of a cockroach and expect break throughs in the fieldsof medicine, engineering, or economics.

Our system as currently structured is created to produce "servants" who are primed for recieving directives and not critical thinkers or innovators.

Until emphasis is placed on technical education and the apprenticeship model of education, we shall always be playing catchup to our contemporaries abroad.

1.The problem with Nigeria and its education system is just "imbalance ".

There are different forms of tertiary education eg Technical colleges,Polythecnics, colleges of educations, schools of health etc.
The government and the citizens don't encourage going to these places. Everybody justs wants to get a certificate to show that they are graduates.

If the University guys want to do research, they can collaborate with the technical guys and poly guys or else the research will just be purely "theoretical "

We need a balance of Theory and Practical.

Not just Theory or not just practical.

2. The Ministry of Education or whichever ministry in charge, should try and build a bridge between the schools and the employers.
They should find out which sector of the economy needs hands and they should go to the schools and encourage students to learn them in order to go into those sectors.

My opinion. Cheers.

OP, we can definitely rebuild our educational system in line with African requirements, as opposed to the imported educational system.

Great topic.

From the above contributions made so far, after analysing and a careful comprehension of every one of the words used, can't we just all agree that the four corners buildings called school in Nigeria is scam ?

great you just woke up, over to the next stage, you would soon discover that Nigeria has been graduating average of 500k students every year since 1960 and those who got employed in 1995 haven't retired yet,a handful would be laid off, then you multiply 500k x 29=14million, job opportunities nationwide government job opportunities struggle at 9 million, you have an average of 5 million unemployed graduates sitting jobless waiting for a job by 2025 of which only those employed in 1995 would probably be retired.by then new fresh 500k graduates are added to that list of unemployed graduates every year as a few gain employment, its a cesspool, better learn a skill as you attend classes it may come in handy after school while you search for a job.

Many universities across the globe boast incredible inventions, but Nigerian graduates often feel their education wasn't worth the effort. Before placing blame, let's consider the whole picture.

Government funding may not be enough to keep facilities modern or update the curriculum for modern jobs. Engaging, real-world-focused teaching also plays a vital role. Think about learning math by using it, not just memorizing formulas.

Maybe the system itself needs a shake-up. Practical skills like problem-solving and critical thinking should be prioritized, not just learning tool names without ever building anything.

However, not all responsibility lies with others. Just like a plant needs sunlight and water, students must be curious and engaged to get the most out of their education.

Therefore, instead of pointing fingers, let's consider it a team effort. The government can invest in better resources and programs, universities can make learning more relevant, and students can take charge of their own learning journey.

Yeah they can shut down federal, state Universities and polytechnics, but they should leave private Universities alone, they are not the cause of the nonsense that goes on in other Universities, they set their standards to be at per with top uni's in the world while they leave the rest of you behind, you people should be ashamed of yourselves that private Universities are among the top 10 universities in Nigeria.
