Did you know that if you put 100 black ants and 100 red ants in a jar, nothing will happen? But if you shake the jar hard, the ants start killing each other. The red ants consider the black ants their enemies, and the black ants consider the red ants their enemies. The true enemy is the one shaking the jar. The same thing happens in human society. So, before we attack each other, we should think about who is shaking the jar!

To understand where the problem started from, you need to go back to history.. Nnamdi Azikiwe and his kinsmen back then felt Nigeria (a new independent country from Britain) was for his Igbo people to rule over and dominate. How will you classify him? Black or red ant?

Just for peace to reign, Awolowo offered to enter into Alliance with Azikiwe's party and deputize him after a major election but Azikiwe went up North to forge alliance with Tafawa Balewa's party, accepting the position of ceremonial figure-head president while Balewa and the North held the real power and influence in governance.
When the romance went sour na, Azikiwe's people planned the first ever Military coup in Nigeria (a bloody one) on 15th January, 1966 to seize power from North. Initially, the plan worked when Aguiyi Ironsi took over as the First Military head of State for just 6 months before he was killed in a counter-coup orchestrated by Northern soldiers in the Army. Those ones were even more brutal as they made sure to cleanse out Igbos from the Army so they won't be able to seize power again (brilliant I'd say)..
After all the killings and anger and tensions, the North demanded exit from Nigeria but the politicians then decided that power should be handed back to them (North) for peace to return.. That was how Yakubu Gowon took over as Head of State at barely 31 years of age.

@OP So you see where the ethnic consciousness and suspicions started?.. As far back as 1960s'
