Road travel in the Southeast region of Nigeria has become increasingly challenging due to numerous checkpoints, causing extensive delays and frustrations for motorists and commuters. The increased presence of security agencies and unofficial "toll gates" at frequent intervals has raised concerns about the efficiency and purpose of these checkpoints.
The distance between Lagos and Aba, normally completed in six to eight hours, has now extended to 12 to 16 hours due to over 120 checkpoints on the 464-kilometer route. These checkpoints, manned by various security agencies and sometimes unofficial actors, contribute to significant delays, with each stop averaging five minutes.
