No matter the amount of farm land you have there are foods you can't produce...

$15 billion food bill is very small for me

The focus should not be on stopping import rather what to do to increase export simple
Will you please shut up?
Do no allow me say something that will get me banned .
$16 billion is too small for YOU?
Who the hell are you?
What is our total export to the World? Apart from crude oil?
Where exactly will the $16 billion come from? borrowing
No one is saying there should be zero imports
The question is ,what exactly are we importing? What
Are we importing caviar or cheese?
Is that where the $16 billion goes?
No
It is
Cooking oil
Palm oil
Maize
Fish
Chicken
Turkey
Wheat
Milk
Rice

If you have nothing sensible to say just shut up.

The issue with the $16 billion is simple Nigeria should be a net exporter of food.
If Holland with I million hectares can we should too
We Are not producing much of value for export besides oil and cannot afford the food imports
That is why there is hunger in the land

You are right.
True free market is impractical.
It is a recipe for an unstable society.

I think some of you can't tell the difference between numbers and rates or are deliberately
sidestepping it.
It doesn't matter if China's agriculture value is 1000 gazillion dollars.

When you are asked what is the percentage contribution of agric to Chinese economy,
it is still 7% !
Guess Nigeria's ratio is?

Also, did you know that Nigeria's oil revenue does not also come close to Chinese manufacturing?
But it is irrelevant to the issue being discussed.

China has 229 million agricultural workers, 25% of its population, and I can tell you it is not a position that China wants to maintain.
It used to have more than 70% of its people in agriculture and guess what its economy looks like at that time, it was famine everywhere.
You see big agricultural numbers is not something to brag about but to plan against.
It signifies low productivity and poverty.

Do you think China practices hoe and cutlass agriculture we practice here in Nigeria?? What's bad about mechanized agriculture that China should be ashamed of?? When 70% of its workforce was in agriculture, it was govt-imposed socialist collectivised form of agriculture, but things have changed.

You import stock fish

You import milk do you have the climate?

You import wine do you have the climate for grapes?

Oh apple juice?

Ooh wheat

We import $16 billion worth of apples? What
The bulk of cooking oil we import is bleached refined palm oil
Aka. RBD palm OIL
I listed those things that make up.The bulk of our import bill which we have no business importing.
I have not said we should not import food so do not dissemble I said NET we should not be a food importer

So and you think the way not to be a net food importer is to reduce import of food?.

What about increasing export of food?
Re: Nigeria Cannot Feed Herself. Spent $15 Billion Importing Food in 2019 by Rostikol: 1:21pm On Feb 07
The first mistake you people make is believing that crap about so much “arable land” in Nigeria, based on that dodgy list of countries posted.

The type of soil we have in Nigeria, and virtually all Africa, simply does not produce abundant yields as much as other continents.

African soil is terrible for agriculture compared to other continents.

It’s the reason we’ve had problems feeding, especially as the African population has risen to 1.3 billion, up from merely 100 million in 1905.

According to wiki,

“ Red soils are typically difficult for crop cultivation because high leaching leads to low water holding capacity, low nutrients, low organic matter (humus), and acidification. Fluctuations in the concentration of iron within red soil are found to have significant implications on its fertility and growth properties.”

One more thing: the real reason mechanised farming rarely works here is that the limited fertility of the soil makes the use of expensive equipment uneconomical.

Guy please stop quoting me
You cannot pretend to be an intellectual
You are a dunce
First did you know we have the climate to PRODUCE wheat?
Did you know we are one of the largest importers of RBD palm oil

You just go about after overdosing on fufu making stupid and ignorant assertions

The point is simple
We should produce optimally what we can which is

Wheat
Rice
Chicken
Fish
Turkey

I
Cooking oil
Sugar
Tomato paste
Cassava
Animal feeds
If we do that we will be a net exporter
Instead you are talking bullshit about apples and canola

Where did you get the deal about red soil? Soil that supports extensive tropical forests is Red soil?
Nigeria is among the largest producers of ginger, cassava, peanuts, cashew nuts, palmoil, yam to name a few. We just don't have the right investment

Until recently Zimbabwe was one of the most efficient food producers in the world when European farmers with knowledge and capital managed farms
Same in South Africa
The issue is one of knowledge, technology and capital not this bullshit about red soil

It's foolish and primitive to want to produce most things you consum

Pick the few you can prosuce well better than most of the world

Focus on it produce them in excess export and use the earnings to import things you can't produce efficiently

Between a man who farms his own food, treat himself, sow his own clothes, repair his own stuffs

And a man who specialized in one thing say making cloths and buys the rest who would be richer?

How much cheaper? By what factor?
Please cite a figure
What is the margin/difference?

So we have working refineries?
we just don't use them because it is cheaper to import?

your refineries are not efficient reason no big oil player wants them for free even

Obj tried dashing it to Shell they said no... If you know business u know refineries are a complex low profit margin business

It's mathematically impossible to refine fuel here cheaper than we import

We simply do not have the scale to make that happen, our demand is to low for such investment

The government must involve the youth in agriculture.

And they must incentivize agriculture for youths to be attracted to it!

Give free land, provide tractors for rent or support financing option for them to acquire one, guarantee sales of their produce and watch how youths will flock the farming sector and crash the price of food.

This worked everywhere in the world! You must support agriculture and incentivize it! This is not rocket science. We will become a major exporter of produce in no time.

Cost of living in high in many western countries, but they incentivize agriculture, food is always dirty cheap. Also, no tax on any food stuff.
