Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has announced plans by his administration to cultivate 150,000 hectares of wheat next farming season.

The governor, who spoke in Dutse, the state capital, on Wednesday, when he received the Africa Development Bank delegation, disclosed plans to expand the programme to other crops in 2025.

The Federal Government had allocated 40,000 hectares of land for wheat farming to Jigawa State under the initiative to enhance food security in Nigeria where over 10,000 farmers are supported with agricultural inputs for effective farming.

This is contained in a statement by Special Assistant Media to the governor, Zainab Ringim, a copy of which was made available to The PUNCH on Wednesday.

Namadi expressed the commitment and determination of the government to improve food security in the state and the county in general.

Ringim, in the statement, said, “Governor Namadi further stated that the only way to move people out of poverty is through the development of agriculture.”

The statement said the governor lauded President Bola Tinubu for initiating various agricultural intervention programmes since the inception of his administration.

She further disclosed that the governor also commended “the initiative of feed the African initiative established by the African Development Bank, assuring that government will monitor all the inputs interventions to ensure adequate use for the attainment of greater Jigawa.”

As contained in the statement, earlier, the leader of the delegation, Dr. Martings Fregnen, said the visit was aimed at intimating the governor on the activities of the bank to agree on the areas of continued collaboration.

Fregnen said the National Agricultural Development Scheme will be supported in the areas of irrigated land, farmers’ financing and the provision of opportunities for the young people for the development of the region.

Other key stakeholders appreciated the support and commitments of the Jigawa State Government and assured a willingness to maintain the cordial relationship between the two parties.

It's not to cultivate it, na to harvest it. Bandidoes will tell them how much fine to pay before harvesting.

This is good news, if you drive between spokane, washington and idaho, there is about a 100 mile stretch of Dry wheat farming, its the largest dry wheat farming in the world, the moisture from the winter snow is used to plant and harvest wheat before the next winter rolls in. Its really neat. We can send 100 people in batches to learn the technology and the process involved, these people can come back and teach others......

Dont ask federal government for the money, source the funds from private investors, venture capitalists. The governors have to be taught to look inwards for funding. Mobilize funds from the billionaires in your states.

These are wealthy jigawa people, All fingers cannot point to Aso rock everytime.

We have to keep trying till we get it right....we spend too much money importing wheat, when we have enough land to plant it and export to other African countries eventually.

After doing so, some bad elements in the government will bring their bandits boys to be killing the farmers and the price will triple up again... Rice is a clear example.

Pain brings the best in us, apparently!

Na hunger go reset our factory settings. Kudos to Jigawa.

There's more to be done:
1. Tinubu should rejig our security architecture. Our farmers must be protected.

2. Sign into law the death penalty for kidnappers.

3. The rail lines connecting the south to the north must be revitalized. We need our local cargo flights in operations. We have cargo airports scattered across the federation.

4. The security checkpoints on our roads must stop taxing our truck drivers. Tinubu get these done.

5. Then we can start training our farmers and subsidizing mechanized farming equipments.

6. The FG should engage the private sectors and foreign investors into setting up large scale mechanized farms in Nigeria. Truth be told, we can never feed the nation with our current ways of farming, talk less of producing extra for export.

7. From there, we can start building value chains - adding more values to our agric product before exporting them. States government can borrow a leaf from the Lagos State Government. I don't know why each state doesn't have an agricultural hub by now. State governments should wake up.

To later sell at exorbitant rate,,,,,no be today

FG should please grant agricultural interventions in terms of fertilisers, improved seedlings, mechanised farming tools etc MASSIVELY to the Southern part of the country too. Let's check its outcome on availability and affordability of food.

And of course provide security for our farmers.

Governors in the South should wake up and invest massively in Agriculture, there's vast fertile land of grasses and forest that can be used to cultivate food for God's sake.

You people and bad thinking 😞. You are crying for help and someone decided to give his own opinion but you are already bringing out reasons it won't work. Are you the logistic for those bad elements? Negative thinking is part of the main reason Nigeria is suffering right now. I will try to check on you from now on, you need help😔
