This is the right time for federal government of Nigeria to review the ban on the importation of cement.
Research have shown that similar grade of cement we use here which are produced in other African countries, are comparably cheaper. Before the ban in the importation of cement, we have never had it this bad. In fact the price of cement then was kept below N1,000 per bag. I understand that the policies then was aimed at encouraging local production and employment generation along the production line. But this policies so far is destructive overall, the qualities of bricks being produced recently is nothing to commend on. Majority of brick manufacturers tends to mix more sand to a constant cement ratios there by producing bricks that cant withstand normal stress, this consequences can not be overemphasize.
Furthermore, as cement manufacturer brazenly inflate their cost despite sourcing most raw materials locally, it will contribute to hyperinflation in the local economy.
In my opinion, I humbly suggest that the government should relax the ban on cement importations to drive down the high cost of cement in the country. If the above suggestion can not be met, we should all in unison, suspend all existing project there by lowering the demand for this commodity. If the demand for this commodity is lowered manufacturer will have no choice than lowering their prices.
