The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abuja zone, expressed deep sorrow on Monday over the loss of several of its members due to economic hardship, inadequate remuneration, and unfavorable working conditions prevailing in the country.

According to ASUU, at least 46 academics have passed away in universities within the Abuja zone, including the University of Abuja, Federal University of Technology Minna, Federal University Lafia, Nasarawa State University Nasarawa, and Ibrahim Babaginda University, Lapai.

Salahu Muhammed, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Abuja zone, conveyed these concerns in a statement released to the press in Abuja.

He emphasized the adverse impact of poor remuneration and working conditions on the mental and physical well-being of academic staff, noting that many have succumbed to the pressure, stress, and associated health issues.

“The loss of 46 members within universities in the Abuja zone underscores the severity of the situation,” Muhammed said.

I pity those people and most civil servants. Could you imagine people with families earning less than 200k in this economy?

Are professors being owed salaries or how will they suddenly fall dead because of poor remuneration?

Something is not adding up here. Did they died due to hunger or what exactly is killing them?

—In Sept 2022, ASUU said 15 lectures died due to strike.

—In Oct 2022, ASUU said 21 professors died over strike.

—2024 no strike yet, but 46 suddenly died due to poor remuneration.

Hardship. A country with so many professor's but no manufacturing base. Imagine senators importing jeep at N180million and feeling shameless about it. Next thing some idiot will say it's cheaper to import cars than manufacturing locally , then back up such senseless policy with unproven economic jargons . Am sure the central bank Governor has started to understand that Havard training is not sufficient in Nigeria.

Most of the Professors were Returning Officers, collation officers or participated in one way or the order during the election. They played a part in the election that brought the current administration.

Make dem no worry 2023 was Renewed Hope.

2027 na Hope at last.

Let them endure.

You will see how dumb Nigerians can be in the next election. Those shouting hardship now will be the first to vote based on religion and tribal affiliations

Interesting!

46 died in two universities or two zones..lol. We are all facing hardship. The truth is I don't pity Nigerian lecturers because they are one of the least performing groups of homo sapiens in Naija. Yet, they want to be seen as the best who must be treated well.

If I was the president, I wouldn't pay them "shi shi". I would invest that money in farming. I just dislike them with passion.

I will keep writing this in my posts: if you want to survive this hardship: go buy a piece of land, fence it, and install a borehole. You will start with cultivating perennial vegetables your family will eat. Then, cultivate yams, sweet potatoes and other veggies easy to grow. You can add easy fruits to cultivate to earn income.

If you have extra cash, you can employ someone who can take care of grass-fed livestock. You don't need to do cattle or even huge animals. You can do small ones and maintain yourself in this economy.

Professors themselves are thieves.

Those guys legitly always pocket research/interventions funding for public universities and loot it all which explained why our academic institutions won’t even provide tangible stuffs that can boost stuffs in Nigeria.

Ever since I know what most of these professors are made of, I lost pity for any of them.

So it was Tinubu administration that came in about nine months or so that caused it.
Nobody talks about the former administration who never listened to them for good eight months This new administration even have listening ear paying at least 2 months out of seven months promised. Why are Nigerians so difficult to rule.
RIP to the dead. It's just unfortunate.

Imagine, a whole Uni Abuja, something that did not happen to Professors from poor State's universities. The management of that school is a failure. Of course, everybody wants to blame only the Federal Govt for every of their failure, even State Governors, LG chairmen will blame the Fed Govt, even though they get their monthly allocations plus security votes. It takes pressure off them, as everyone focuses on the worng person.

Anytime University professors are mentioned, what comes to my mind are, aiding and abetting election rigging for politicians, sex for high grades, and selling handouts for grades.Yet,they are still driving jalopy cars of the 80s.
Wack professors that cannot produce anything.

46 deaths is a huge number to be swept under the carpet. The only way to know the real figure and the correlations with the current economic hardship is to compare that death rate with the ones of at least last two years.
If the disparity turns out to be wide, then know that there is blood on Baba-blue’s hands.
