Nigeria was to be named Goldesia after Sir George Taubman Goldie (the British imperialist who sold Nigeria to Britain for £865,000 in 1899), but he 'tastefully declined' the offer.

Flora Shaw, who would later become the wife of Lord Frederick Lugard, then popularised the name "Nigeria" and successfully campaigned for the adoption of the name via the publication of five separate articles in 1897. #HistoryVille

So the country is a property of a Christian country, yet people are behaving like its a gift from their god because Britain allowed them
to have power for its interest.

Poor Nigeria is still British property.

We be market wey dem buy🤦

That’s why they keep dictating who becomes what in Nigeria and continue to select buffoons while at it.

But someday, just like the Americans, the Chinese and the Arabs broke free, Nigeria, nay Africa, will break free from these vultures.

Africans and stupidity. Imagine perpetuating what a few white men designed for their selfish benefit. Imagine if it was Asians or Europeans that some race sat at a table and shared like cake. Even Arab tribe won't permit it. It can only be the black race tolerating rubbish. None would have the boldness to ask why.

Good news is they're all dead now and rotting in hell.

Bad news is we're still suffering the consequences of their actions generations down the line.

Goldesia should have been better...maybe our currency would have been Gold which has more value than Naira.

Besides the main problem was the amalgamation of Nigeria and tribalism.

Na him we dy suffer now.

Currently the country is heading nowhere

Imagine! The man even sold Nigeria to the British government. Thank God that Buhari didn't sell Nigeria to China because the way his government kept borrowing money from them, he nearly did cheesy

Many African countries have changed
their colonial given names, I wonder
why Nigeria has not opened discussion
on this. After all, we even changed our
colonial, though better national anthem..

A common practice by the Europeans
when they first began making contact with
the West African peoples was to name
the various areas in accordance with what
product was readily available from the
coastal areas in question.

Therefore, the area now called Ghana
was a great source of gold, while ivory
which was another valued commodity
was abundant in the area still bearing
Ivory Coast today..

Interestingly, the area that became Nigeria,
especially the now South- South region
being the biggest source of slaves and was
initially called 'Slave Coast' with the Igbos ( "Eboes"wink making up a sizeable population of those sold into slavery from West Africa.

A few Examples countries that changed
their colonial names after independence..

👉Benin Republic was "Dahomey"

👉Burkina Faso was "Upper Volts"

👉Ghana Was was "Gold Coast"

👉Niger Republic was "French Sudan'

👉Zimbabwe was Southern Rhodesia

And many more.

Below is a US advert for sales of
"Eboe" slaves, just arriving from Bonny.
Igbo slaves were valued as very hardworking
