COMMUNIQUE FOLLOWING A NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (NEC) MEETING OF THE NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS (NLC) HELD ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2024

The NEC convened on February 16, 2024, and mandated a 2-Day Nationwide Protest to express collective dismay over the widespread suffering caused by government policies, particularly the increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the depreciation of the Naira, NLC Strike.

After evaluating the effectiveness of the first day of the nationwide protest, the NEC commends Nigerians, NLC affiliates, state councils, workers, and civil society allies for participating in peaceful demonstrations to voice their discontent with the government's actions.

Key Resolutions:

1. Suspension of Street Action: The NEC has decided to suspend street action for the second day of the protest, considering the overwhelming success achieved in meeting the key objectives on the first day.

2. Continuation of Nationwide Action: The nationwide action will persist with simultaneous press conferences scheduled across all states, conducted by the state councils of the Congress, including the National Headquarters.

3. Extension of Ultimatum: The NEC reaffirms and extends the 7-day ultimatum by an additional 7 days, now set to expire on March 13, 2024. During this period, the government is expected to implement agreements from October 2, 2023, and address other demands presented during the nationwide protest.

4. Future Decisions: In the event of non-compliance by the government after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum, the NEC will convene to decide on further courses of action.

The NEC reiterates its commitment to defending and advancing the interests of Nigerian workers and the marginalized masses.

Signed:
Comrade Joe Ajaero - President
Comrade Ismail Bello - Ag. General Secretary
