NYSC BOSS advises corps members to brace up to overcome life challenges

Corps members have been advised to make every effort to overcome life challenges as the world out there is not a bed of roses.

The Director Corps Welfare and Health Services Department, NDHQ, Abuja, Mr Omotade Ayodele Folorunso Benjamin made this call while addressing 2024 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 corps members gathered at the multi-purpose hall of the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, Waye Foundation, Doi-Du, Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.

Omotade, congratulated Corps members on successful completion of their studies, from various citadel of learning which was the first phase of their career journeys.

He told them that their enlistments into one year of national service was a concrete step towards leaving the world of fantasies to world of realities.

He urged them to use their divinely given talents, innate strength and fingers to create wealth for personal survival.

He said this was the only way to wean themselves from parental dependency as he believed, most of them were not born with silver spoons.

Citing example with himself, he said “ I am where, I am today by the special grace of God and dint of hardwork. I didn’t have the luxury of a godfather nor godmother, but l know God the father.

"I wasn’t privileged to have be born with silver spoon. In fact, you could say no spoon at all. Where any existed, there could be nothing to eat with the spoon. But with God, hard work and determination to excel, your future is secured" he said.

Encouraging them further, he said before the harsh realisation of regrets sets in, they should act now by embracing Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Programme of the NYSC.

Omotade said, given the present-day economic realities, it would be an aberration for one to finish the one year mandatory national service and still be dependent on his or her parents.

In his words, “if you cannot assist anyone, don’t be a liability to yourselves.”

Speaking further, Mr. Omotade eulogised the excellent report on exceptional discipline of corps members and entire NYSC Plateau State Camp Community, reiterating that an on-the-spot assessment has further given credence to daily situation reports received about them.

He, however, further admonished them to continue to be responsible and law-abiding citizens during their service year by contributing their quotas to nation building through the platform provided by Community Development Service ( CDS).

In so doing, you would have succeeded not only in impacting your host communities but also left a lasting legacies.

He concluded, by advising them to have respect for the cultures and traditions of their respective host communities, shun activities that could compromise their personal security and build meaningful friendships that could lead to lasting relationships.

Earlier, in her welcome address, the NYSC Plateau State Coordinator, Mrs Esther Tosin Ikupolati appreciated the Director for his visit, noting that she is confident that NYSC Plateau would learn a lot from his wealth of experience and expertise.

Ikupolati gave a detailed brief of the camp administration thus far and the various activities since the commencement of the Orientation Course.

She said that Corps Members who have been well behaved overtime, also have adapted well to the regimented nature of the Orientation Programme.

The Director later inspected Camp facilities such as the quarter guard, Hostels, Kitchen, Clinic, amongst others, and expressed satisfaction on the facilities even though a temporary arrangement.

He also had a brief session with all the camp officials, where he expressed satisfaction on their level of collaboration and appreciated them for their dedication to service and the tenets of the NYSC Scheme.

He urged them, to pay adequate attention to their own health, welfare and security.

In his words, “You will have to be very healthy and alive to do this work, which is spiritual.”

The high point of the visit were; dance entertainment by the cultural troupe, presentation of cash and material gifts to Camp Community, Quarter Guard, Man ‘O’ war, Band, Orientation Broadcasting Service, (OBS), Red Cross, Dance troupe, three Corps Camp Directors, among others for their outstanding contributions to the success of the orientation course so far.
