Biocentrism is a theory that proposes a radical shift in our understanding of the universe, placing life and consciousness at the center of reality. According to this view, the universe is not a physical entity but a mental construct shaped by our perceptions. This theory, introduced by Robert Lanza in 2007, has stirred debates and discussions in both the scientific and philosophical communities, as it challenges the conventional views of physics and biology.

However, biocentrism has also faced many criticisms and counterarguments, seeking to debunk its claims and assumptions. In this feature, we will explore what biocentrism is, what are its main arguments and implications, and what are the major issues and concerns that undermine its validity.

What is Biocentrism?
Biocentrism is a philosophical concept that posits that life and consciousness are the fundamental components of existence, with all other aspects being secondary. It suggests that biology, not physics, is the primary science of the universe, and that the precise conditions of our universe, which seem perfectly tailored for life, can be understood when one recognizes that life and consciousness are central to existence.

Biocentrism also emphasizes the role of perception in shaping our reality, claiming that time and space are not objective entities but rather relative to the observer. In essence, the universe is not a tangible thing but a mental construct.

Biocentrism was introduced by Robert Lanza, a scientist and a medical doctor, in his 2007 publication, “Biocentrism: How Life and Consciousness are the Keys to Understanding the True Nature of the Universe.” He later expanded his ideas in his 2009 book, “Biocentrism: How Life and Consciousness are the Keys to the True Nature of Everything,” co-authored with Bob Berman, an astronomer and a science writer. Lanza claimed that biocentrism offers a new perspective on the universe, one that integrates physics and biology, and that explains some of the enigmatic phenomena that have puzzled scientists for decades, such as the origin of the universe, the nature of consciousness, and the meaning of life.

What are the Main Arguments and Implications of Biocentrism?
Biocentrism is based on seven principles, which are:

The first principle states that what we perceive as reality is a process that involves our consciousness. In other words, reality is not something that exists independently of us, but rather something that we create and experience through our senses and our mind.

The second principle states that our external and internal perceptions are intertwined, and that they are inextricably linked to the concept of self. In other words, we cannot separate ourselves from what we perceive, and we cannot perceive anything without a sense of self.

The third principle states that the behavior of matter and energy depends on the presence of an observer. In other words, the physical properties of the universe are not fixed or predetermined, but rather subject to change and variation depending on how and when we observe them.
