Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) is urging thePresident Bola tinubu-led government to review its fuel subsidy removal policy, due to allegations that the country is still paying for the subsidy.

Falana made the remarks in a signed statement titled “Fuel subsidy again?” that he released to newsmen on Sunday.

He stressed that it’s high time the federal government reviewed the fuel subsidy removal rather than urging Nigerians to continue to endure the hardship.

The statement reads, “President Bola Tinubu had on his inauguration declared an end to the subsidy era, triggering a hike in the prices of petroleum across the country.

“But in recent times, the World Bank and the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited Mr. Robert Dickerman claimed that the Federal Government is still paying subsidy for the product.

“Curiously, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited has not deemed it fit to deny the serious allegation that fuel subsidy has been restored. Since there is no provision for fuel subsidy in the 2023 and 2024 Appropriation Acts the federal government should, without any further delay, confirm or deny the serious allegation and end the opacity surrounding the importation of fuel from foreign countries.

“It would be recalled that after the Muhammadu Buhari administration announced that it had removed subsidy on petrol, it turned around to spend N11 trillion on the so-called “under-recovery” within a period of 8 years.

“Therefore, instead of urging Nigerians to continue to endure the hardship caused by the removal of subsidies on petrol, the Bola Tinubu administration. If the federal government is spending as much as N1 trillion on fuel subsidy per month, it is high time the policy was reviewed in the interest of the Nigerian people.”

OIL SUBSIDY PAYMENT. YES or NO ?

The government should come out and tell us the truth.
Are we still paying fuel subsidy or not ?
If we are still paying subsidy why is the cost of living and fuel prices still high ?

Can this government make this oil subsidy issue more transparent ?

Nigerians are bearing the brunt of this oil subsidy.

Baba Falana, just try and submit your debit card to Tinubu to deduct subsidy from it and give to marketers. do that first and Tinubu would review subsidy real quick.

Governance isn't about "grab it, snatch it and run with it". It's about the blue print and a team of technocrats to make things work once you take up the seat. It's appalling that PMS subsidy is still on, but yet cost of living for the masses is still very high. If at all Nigerians are learning their lessons when it comes to choosing their leaders, it must be in a hard way.

Honestly thats the best thing for this government but pride will not let the Tinubu government.

How will it sound thay he protested against subsidy removal, later removed the subsidy thus crashing the 3conomy, then later reinstating the removed subsidy after damaging the economy.

He will rather continue with subsidy removal

He actually doesn't care. Otherwise, he would have had it all properly planned out including factoring a review of the performance of the policy & it's overall effect on the wellbeing of the citizens. But as long as he lives expense free and he still has enough to himself, nothing else matter, after all he only said it is his turn.
