I don't know why people are engaging trolls on this thread.

There are people that come here to post something negative, even if what they are posting makes no sense at all (imagine someone saying that Lagos should leave Niger State and partner with Oyo. Why should Lagos leave Niger?

Imagine people that know quite well that this practice has been on since the days when Fashola was governor, saying that the agreement was signed because of something that Peter Obi said recently, just because they want to generate reactions)

These people deserve to be completely ignored. Just ignore them like I do. Only engage with people that have something sensible to contribute. Those people are only looking for attention and the best thing is to starve them of that attention.

As you can see from the pictures above (from 2011) the goal has always been to produce Eko Rice.

LAKE Rice came into the picture as a stop gap measure because Ambode demolished the rice mill in order to build a bigger one.

Lagos govt to upscale Imota rice milling plant from 2.5 to 16 metric tonnes per hour

By Agency Report April 25, 2017

As part of plans to ensure food self-sufficiency, especially through rice production, the Lagos State Government says it is up-scaling the Imota Rice Milling Plant from 2.5 metric tons to 16 metric tons.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Toyin Suarau, who made the disclosure on Tuesday at a Ministerial Press Briefing to mark Governor Akinwumi Ambode’s second year in office, said the plant would be delivered within one year.

Mr. Suarau said that the plant would be the biggest in Nigeria when delivered and also drive the state’s major goal to scale up food sufficiency from 12 per cent to 25 per cent in three years.

“The ministry is mandated to facilitate sustainable food production, poverty reduction and job creation through several agriculture projects and programmes.

“The major goal of the ministry is to make the state food secured and scale up food self-sufficiency from the current 12 per cent to 25 per cent within the next three years.

“It is part of plans to ensure that the production of Lake Rice and to stop milling rice paddy in other states like Kebbi, Jigawa and Kano states.

“We have begun plans to up Imota rice milling plant from 2.5 metric tons per hour to 16 metric tons per hour within the next one year,” he said.

Mr. Suarau said the project was not rocket science because it took a lot of time to set up since the machines would be imported from outside the country.

The commissioner also said that since the state started sales of the Lake Rice in December 2016, 35,647 bags of 50kg, 32,539 of 25kg and 30,786 of 10kg had been sold.

He added that to boost rice production, 100 farmers through the FADAMA III additional financing programme, rice cultivation had improved from less than one ton to about three tons per hectare in the state.

Mr. Suarau noted that the state was embarking on several initiatives to boost food production in the areas of input supplies, estate initiatives, Agriculture Youth Empowerment Scheme, Rice for Jobs.

Also, Avia-Badagry Farm Service/Entrepreneurship Center and Coconut Development and Commercial Agriculture Development Project are among the initiatives.

Mr. Suarau dispelled the rumour that the sale of Lake Rice had been hijacked by money bags and compelled members of the public to come up with proof for the law to take its course. (NAN)

Keep quite, you exude ignorance about the political system of Nigeria.

All the lands in Nigeria are owned by the States Governments, except the FCT , which is owned by the FG.

Agriculture is largely under the States.

The roles of the FG in Agriculture is limited to Policy formulations (e.g restrictions of foreign agricultural produce) ,standardization and regulations (e.g intoduction of Faro 52-Rice species by Akinwunmi Adeshina during GEJ Administration), counterpact funding (e.g CBN's anchor borrower's programmed), subsidies on Farm implements etc.

The President can't just stroll into Ekiti or Ebonyi to start rice farms or cocoa plantations in Ondo or Edo States.

Each States should invest in Agriculture to provide foods for their peoples, States that can't shoud buy from those States that ca produce foods (as Sanwo-Olu is doing here) or they should reduce their food consumption by implementing 1-0-1 feeding ration formula

What are you even saying, this thing is beyond you Sir

A commodities exchange was also set up (on Broad Street) to trade agricultural products from the farms and raw materials for the farms and processing facilities.

I don't think I need to post that article here.

In recent times there has been problems of insecurity in Northern Nigeria and this has affected food production because farmers are afraid to go to the farm. Yet, remember that Governor Ambode increased the size of the rice mill and made it one of the biggest in Africa. So there isn't enough paddy for the mill. This is Governor Sanwo-Olu's solution.

Sanwo-Olu To Request FG To Permit Importation Of Rice Paddy For Imota Rice

Paraman:

The Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has stated that he would request the federal government through the Ministry of Agriculture to allow importation of rice paddy for the Imota rice mill to process.

The Governor stated this during a media chat while lamenting the reason for the non-functioning of the Imota rice mill to tackle the skyrocketing food inflation in the state, especially rice.

According to the Governor,

“The challenge that we have is feedstock- that is paddies. We have two aggregators- AFEX and Lagos commodity exchange that we have committed to look for paddy for us”

“One of the things that has happened is that paddy is not easily growable in the Southern part of the country. We have farmland in Ogun, Osun and Oyo states but it cannot meet up with the size and capacity of the mill.

“One of the things that we realized is that up north, there are a few issues around paddy. So for our mill, we are going to be having a conversation with the Minister for Transport and with the federal government. If they can permit us to do a one-off import of paddy for about two vessels. That can take us about 8 to 9 months production of close to 2 million bags of 50kg”

“If we have that exemption, we can use that to encourage the rice farmers to go back to their farms”

Furthermore, on the rice mill, the Governor stated that the state is expecting some paddies from the north through active collaboration with state Governors in that part of the country.

25% discount Sunday market

The Governor as a measure of tackling the food inflation across the state promised to begin a 25% discount on Sunday markets across 48 locations in the state.

The Governor noted beneficiaries of the project will be those spending N25,000 and below on food items who would be given a rebate immediately after purchase.

He recalled that the initiative was first developed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

What you should know

The Imota rice mill is a 2.8 million 50kg bag capacity rice mill commissioned by President Buhari in January 2023 but has failed to produce to capacity owing to lack of paddies and other issues. The mill was built at an estimated cost of N20 billion.

Hope this won't be a replica of the Kebbi partnership deal that the northern state defaulted on, citing inadequacy caused by insurgence.
I hope they pull this through though for the sake of the masses in the two partnering states.

Sanwolu be like since the president dey slag, make we take Obi's advice sharp sharp

Peter Obi as president, Every Local govt in Nigeria will be empowered to own a large farm, either in your LGA or outside even your state

Perhaps you meant the other way. Obi just copied the good move LASG team is undertaken AS MULTIPLE PROJECTS have already been put on ground or in motion in preparation for this partnership many years ago before OBI's advisers asked him to make his announcement. Lagos runs continous governance with great decision makers thus putting the state in steady sustainable progress and/or development. Where LAGOS government is concerned, Obi still dey learn.
