With all the cows roaming and ravaging farms ... why must milk or milk products be imported? .... don't these cows produce milk?

This is what happens with every government initiative. The beneficiaries simply take it as their time to game the system to make abnormal profits.

This is why the government must get involved through public private partnerships to control exploitation that is pervasive in this part of the world.

DIVINEEVIDENCE:
Watch as importers will still exploit this window go make abnormal profits to the detriment of everyone else.

Government will not rear diary cattle for you, fish, poultry and neither will they force you to.

That's ur responsibility as citizen. Stop putting the blame on government.

When we have surplus of these, we all going to smile.

Or what's your responsibility as citizen? Ask yourself

What is this government doing about production. We import milk, diary products, fish, chicken etc when we large swath of ocean, cows roaming aimlessly, vast lands.

The greatest war Nigeria has been facing is economic war, both from external powers and internal saboteurs.

There are some countries hell bent on ensuring Nigeria remains import dependent and their are some Nigerians hell bent on ensuring they are the only ones who should produce and sell food and other commodities.

For the sake of humanity divide Nigeria.. Wole Soyinka.

Previous government wanted us to start looking inward
This one came, scattered everything, now wants us to return back to depending on importation for everything.

2 steps forward
20 steps backward

What a country.

You are the one not following. They shut the borders believing local productions will pick up and at a reduced price. But it's obvious our people are even selling at same price importers put on their goods despite sourcing for dollars through black market. So why continue suffering the citizens?

You can't achieve much from our local production because of many factors. A farmer who have toiled, then expecting harvest, all of a sudden, he suffers loss due to herdsmen feeding their cows on his farm. What do you expect.
Many production company are spending more due to light issue. How do you expect their product to be cheap.
Most of raw materials for production are imported and dollar is needed.
The cost still goes high.
Its not easy. Government need to first of all tackle insecurity and other options

Few importers had access to fx and would fix the price they like, the products were seen as cb by customs with lot of restrictions making it difficult and expensive to get into the country. But now many importers are allowed, competition would crash the price

No it wasn't a contraband, just that the banks/CBN will not approve your form M, so importers have to source fx from black market, this was before the floating of the Naira.

That's exactly what this means. Before now only a few companies had access to forex at govt rates to import. Now anyone importing milk and dairy products won't have to go and source forex from the black market

Before now only few companies got forex at the official rates and as such it discouraged other companies from getting involved because they wouldn't be able to compete in the market with the ones enjoying govt incentive. But now that the restrictions have been removed, just about anyone can get forex at the same rates to import. With many players in the market, prices will becomes competitive as the best price wins. The few companies importing are the ones enjoying the monopoly of the market
.

it was a blanket cover, no company was enjoying any incentive for importation of dairy product. if you have evidence of a company that was exempted please show me.

Seriously, I don't know why the government are wasting time on border opening.
They should lift ban on rice, cos I don't understand why rice iss still expensive.
For over eight years now, buhari government in other to encourage local farmers closed the borders, instead this move to make rice surplus and cheep, farmers decided to do otherwise
You are funny. How do you expect it to become cheap when you have refused to join in investing in rice production? The idea was to encourage more people to invest or farm rice. And off course the reduction of supply was going to make the price go up and the expectation would be that as the price goes up then more people would get interested and get involved. If enough people got involved and there is excess production, of course the price would have crashed. It may not get as low as when importations was done, but the price would have been low. But Nigerians including you would not take advantage of the opportunity but prefer to complain. Many are cashing out and would continue to cash out.

The price of milk and dairy products is one of the reasons why bakers are crying over cost of production

Prices of 25kg of milk is now over 150,000 because only a few companies were given forex at official rates to import them.

so you expect Nigerians to put their scarce resources in a very harsh and dangerous business environment where criminals can wake up one morning to destroy years of labour or where one "politician" can influence government policy to favour only him and his cronies.
Whatever way you look at it, it is the duty of the government to provide a business friendly environment, security, stable and open policy for all that would enable businesses to thrive. I would not be the one to do that and the government have failed in all.

We don't really have much local producers of milk and other dairy products in the country.
How many companies manufacture quality milk and other dairy products in the country?
There is Chi Limited (Chivita hollandia ), Friesland (Peak milk),Dano milk producers, Promasidor(Cowbell),etc.
Not that much.
So this measure is very much expected. Of which, it should be a temporary measure.
Government should still focus on empowering more local businesses to go into dairy production.
Local production still remain key.

Nigeria lacks any competitive and comparative advantage in producing these things. To achieve self sufficiency in them would take decades and the equivalent of billions of dollars.

It's like asking a fat man to be a sprinter. Such would be better off for shot put or discuss throwing. As a sprinter, he would always pass the finish line but will never win.

Countries do best when they pour resources in areas they have competitive and comparative advantage. If the money poured wasted on rice had been pumped into agricultural products the country excelled at, the nation's exports would have increased by at least $5bn, if not up to $10bn. Sheabutter and sesame seed have been estimated could each yield $2bn if fully exploited.

As Pat Utomi, import substitution policies don't work. They have failed to indisrialize the country.

there is a friendly business environment in agriculture especially diary cattle, that's why the FG recently opened the doors to import diary product.
