Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has rejected the hike in electricity tariff, saying it will worsen the suffering of the people.

In a series of tweets on Friday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate in the last election accused the government of unleashing another dose of reforms without adequate notice and without an adequate post-reform plan to mitigate the pain.

The PDP chieftain said the increase in electricity tariff is coming at a time when “Nigerian citizens are going through excruciating difficulties occasioned by the withdrawal of subsidy on PMS and floating of the domestic currency.

“The government has not successfully dealt with the pains associated with the implementation of those measures, and now this. The hike in electricity tariff will create more difficulties for the citizens as inflationary pressures are elevated.

“Our manufacturing sector will similarly be impacted negatively. Not only are they paying higher interest rates on their bank loans but also paying more for diesel, paying higher wages as a result of the new minimum wage. The President’s men are pushing the economy into a deeper crisis. His reforms are without a human face.”

The opposition figure said, ” It is important that we understand the root cause of the inefficiencies in the power sector before unleashing another dose of reforms. It is time to revisit the privatization exercise that produced the DISCOs.

“Tinubu must (a) ensure that these reforms are sequenced, (b) implement measures to mitigate the pain, and (c) hold the NERC responsible for ensuring improved service delivery.”

This one just dey remember say Nigeria still dey exist...

Mikano Atiku shouldn't be putting mouth about this particular issue. When Atiku was Vp to Obasanjo, the special assignment ( portfolio) that was given to him was how to revive Nigeria epileptic power.

Instead of Atiku to fix the problem, he rather invited generator company like Mikano to come and scatter the situation.

So Atiku, STFU about the electricity situation in Nigeria, you had all the power to fix it but you chose not to.

Actually Atiku is right on this one !

Tinubu's policy are so much in a hurry to generate revenue without any soft landing for the common man.

Petrol subsidy gone !

Dollars subsidy gone !

Electricity subsidy gone !

All these policies are harshest on the poor and middle class !

The rich dont care because they can afford it !

12 months in office Tinubu is yet to implement a policy that enriches or create opportunities for the poor Nigerians.

PS: I forgot, he shares grains regularly

I have realise that africa politicians see opposition as only means to criticise the government. If you are not there, everything the government does is rubbish. Atiku was vice president, he was placed to oversee selling of public assets. It was criticised by opposition then. He supported buhari initially but after sometime they fell apart.

Somebody must be in government at a particular time. The government must have priorities. People must criticise. We should be concern about solutions at all time.

Government go and come.

Stale propaganda lies from the clueless APC e-warriors.

What evidence do you have of Atiku’s ownership of Mikano or Obasanjo asking him to be focused on electricity when Bola Ige and Agunloye were his trusted ministers

Where did I say Atiku owns Mikano?

Is that the only thing you could grab from my comments? What did he do with the power portfolio that was given to him.

Same Atiku that sold all our national assests to his cronies and friends at scrap value. Same PDP government that sold NEPA and put Nigerians in darkness. God indeed is a patient God.

Re: Electricity Tariff Hike: Tinubu’s Reforms Lack Human Face – Atiku by emkz: 7:40am On Apr 06
Atiku's sale of national assets lacked human face as well.

Was Atiku and Obasanjo not in charge of $16billion for power sector reforms? What did they do with the funds?

It is true that Nigerians are facing excruciating pains, but it is wicked to blame Tinubu for everything happening today. The rot today was succession of years of poor management and misappropriation of resources by previous administration. The last person who was prudent with our financed was General Sani Abacha who was not on record to have borrowed a dime and was committed to infrastructure. Atiku and Obasanjo wasted $18billion for debt forgiveness with the Paris Club. How much did we need to build power projects to service each of the geopolitical zones that these people wasted such funds asking for debt forgiveness? Now that we have debt forgiveness, what economic impact did it have on out nation?

Let us also remember that it was during Atiku and Obasanjo's time that Nigeria started this practice of "defending the naira", which is equivalent to subsidizing the rich. If Atiku, who is now a sudden economic expert, was fair, why didn't the rich sacrifice that subsidy for the power sector to be reformed?

Dear Nigerians, Atiku is not on your side. He never was and never will be. He said it himself that he wants to make his friends rich.

We plead with Nigerians to bear. We expect a minimum wage announcement within a month to cushion the effects of these tarrif increments. We clearly see why even Buhari could not carry out these reforms. They are unpopular and would bite us. We also call on government and politicians to feel the brunt of the people. In doing these, we ask governors of the northern states to stop paying for pilgrimage subsidies. Such funds should be channeled to solving problems of transportation, infrastructure, water supply and poverty alleviation. Pilgrimage is a personal thing.
