Optometrists are people who study Optometry(a 6yr course) and posses a Doctor of Optometry degree. They're not medical doctors and don't attend medical schools. They're only licensed to examine the eyes, diagnose and treat common/minor eye diseases, and do not perform eye surgeries.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who graduate from medical schools with MBBS(a 6yr course + 1yr internship) and went further to specialize in examining, diagnosing and treating eye diseases of any variety, both medically and surgically.
So, to become an Ophthalmologist, you first have to become a medical doctor and then undergo a postgraduate study to specialize in ophthalmology.

An ophthalmologist(MBBS after 7yrs + Postgraduate study after extra 5 to 6yrs) is far superior to an optometrist(Doctor of Optometry after 6yrs).
