Amotekun in all SW states is a big evidence that state police can and will work. You know Aketi was clamoring for firearms but buhari didn't approve. The structure is almost on ground in the SW. They only need to upgrade the existing structure, provide better training, provide modern gadgets, Arms and technology and recruit more operatives. If some states have been paying salaries for Amotekun, all states can afford to finance the state police by cutting excessive spending. Security must be their number one priority

And how effective has Amotekun being?

All you wrote here were maybe perceived disadvantages what about the advantages or is there none....?
Pls open your mind to the other benefits of this state policing which is the norms in our present situation and almost in all civilised countries all over the world...
With it's few disadvantages it's benefit is more....
Insecurity is a problem and this can reduce it to the nearest minimum
Unemployment is another...

Tinubu should drop this dangerous idea. State police will be used by the State Governors against anyone that disagrees with them politically. That scenario would spell doom for the country's democracy. Furthermore, the usual Nigerian factors like ethnicity will come into play heavily.

Another thing is that most states can barely afford to pay salaries of their civil servants currently. It is highly doubtful that they can train, equip and pay additional thousands of state police personnel. The end result will be chaos and more crimes in most of the country. Please Nigeria is not ripe for this. Apart from the US, most other countries don't even practice such a system.

Bad idea... Governors would turn them into puppets and use them for their selfish political motives. Only power-hungry governors want this.

Nigeria isn't ready for state policing! There are some things that need to remain at the federal level and policing is still one of them.

You want federalism but only a certain aspect of it. Which other country is running a federal system without the states being able to police itself?
The Nigerian police is simply not adequate to police 200 million people.
If individual states cannot afford it then structure it along the six geopolitical zones.

Kano is not in support. Abba Yusuf, the governor said it. And recently, the state's "invincible governor," Rabiu Kwankwaso yesterday said the security issue is solely rest with the federal government.

If Kwankwanso said that, it means he's deceiving himself and his dogmatic followers.

Internal security threat within the state is the responsibility of state government, any external security threat against Nigeria, it's the responsibility of federal government and FG can only assist state government when needed alone.

it's not true. Those factors I stated are overwhelming and will just create the unintended consequences. This is Nigeria where we have what is popularly preferred to as the "Nigerian factor". Instead of that, the Nigerian Police should look into ways to improve upon community policing.

E NO GO BETTER FOR YOU !!! You are an enemy of humanity. Boko Haram and Fulani terrorist supporter. Is the federal government not abusing the police by supporting Fulani terrorists to terrorise Nigerians? Let's have state police and see if any bloody terrorist will near my state again. We will unleash state police with all we have on them that in their lives they will never near South East again.

This state police will be a disaster in this country. We have governors who are emperors. It'll only be a tool to oppress opposition. States that can't pay salaries, want to fund state police. In a short while everyone will be crying to go back to the status quo. I just dey laff oo 🤣🤣🤣🤣

"However, former President Goodluck Jonathan, who initiated the 2014 conference, and his successor, Muhammadu Buhari, did not implement the recommendations despite the deteriorating security situation in the country during their administrations."

This is where having big balls comes in, even the almighty Baba Buhari couldn't remove subsidy. GEJ who attempted couldn't sustain it because of pressure. It takes a daring Tinubu to finally remove subsidy without northern and Southwestern turning country
upsidedown.
This state policing will actually turn state governors to gods and the governors under whose administration it started could become powerful political godfather in his state if he decides to use the power for that purpose. However, I'm sure most of them wouldn't want creation of another set of employees because they don't like paying salaries.

Even if it is 1 state that is prepared to take on state police, the federal government should grant the request.

Every state mustn't participate in state policing.

Before you talk about state police, you must first put in place a system where all the States control their resources and then sends a little thing to the Federal Government rather than the other way round. Just like in the US, Germany and some other countries that practice true federalism.

What we should be talking about is how the Nigerian Police can improve upon their efforts to put in place community policing.
State Policing is a form of Community Policing where indigenous people at local government level who are familiar with the local terrain will be employed to curb the incessant security challenges thereby complementing the effort of other security agencies including the Police. That is the right thing to do. You can choose from security of lives and property and your supposedly fear of abuse by the governors

Anyone against state police is ignorant of the cause of security issues in Nigeria, just as its said that politics is local same us swcurity. There has been alot of coverup and sabotage within the federal security architecture which will be addressed by the state policing, with that no intruder can storm any state with arms at midnight and slaughter citizens in there sleep without a switf response from the local state police.

will you people ever get sense? We're talking about protecting life, has governors not using Thugs already? Police will even be under law control, who did Tinubu used in assassinated Funsho Williams? They already have state power to do anything they like weather police or no police, the State Police knows every Conner of the states where criminals maybe hidden, both domestic and foreign threats. State Police won't allow his imidiate family got attacked, but when you bring Muslims from Borno, Katsina, Zamfara to come and protect people in Enugu, oweri, PH, bayelsa against their brothers bandits, Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram. They will fold hands. Imagine States are allowed to control their resources, what will mahamed haruna will be doing in seme burders seizes Yorubas and igbo goods auctioning it for his fellow Hausas

Re: State Police: 20 Governors’ Decisions Ready For NEC May – NGF by Eteka1(m): 9:55am On Apr 07
Most likely outcome of State Police in Nigeria;

(1) Abuse of Power by State Governors with disastrous consequences for our democracy. In America that we are trying to copy, there are robust checks and balances, strong institutions to prevent a state governor using the State police to witch-hunt his opponents, or gain undue political advantage. Unfortunately, the same thing cannot be said about Nigeria.

(2) Effectively funding a State police will be cost prohibitive for a vast majority of States in Nigeria. It is a well known fact that most states in Nigeria find it difficult to pay the salaries of their civil servants. How then will they be able to effectively train, equip and fund the operations of tens of thousands of police personnel in their respective States in addition to the current wage bill?

(3) Ethnicity and tribalism will be a problem in most states. One ethnic group (the Ethnic group of the Governor) dominates the State police. And in case of a crisis between two ethnic groups in the State, these ethnic sentiments will likely come into play as to how the State police reacts to the issues.

Just like Gov. Makinde said, state policing is a constitution affair and should be handed over to the house of assembly and not governors or it forum.
All these political brouhaha, reveals a lot of the executives uncommitted interest to the full implementation of state policing, because, it will endanger the president's second tenure ambition, and if he chooses to implement it, in his second term, the National assembly will frustrate the bill till the end of his tenure.
That's is why state policing comes with lots of lip service, and should be handle cautiously if you as an individual has a critical decision in your life that factors in state policing as a variable.
