He was very foolish for running.
The smart thing to do is get a lawyer, spend some days in detention and apply for bail.

Most likely, he received intel that he will be detained for a long time.
But even at that, his running away will ensure that if eventually arraigned,
he will not be granted bail so he won't flee the country.
