Azia feud: Anambra Govt declares fresh election to elect monarch


The Anambra State Government has opted for a fresh election in Azia, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State to elect its monarch.

Before this decision, Chief Felix Ifeanyimuo, had laid claimed to the traditional stool having contested the position with late Prof Titus Eze, who was the Igwe-elect of the community before his demise.


The situation polarized the community, plunging it into many years of crisis and litigation.

As a consequence, the state government had to set up of a panel of inquiry on the matter with a view to resolving the crisis.

However, in an interview on Friday with our correspondent , the State Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, said government had resolved to conduct a fresh election to elect the community's traditional ruler to end the feud.

He said the decision was taken after reviewing the panel’s report and the community's constitution

The Commissioner said the
government was working out arrangements to conduct the poll for the election of a new monarch of the community which he said could come up during the mass return and new yam festival of the community in September.

While he appealed to members of the community to remain peaceful, the Commissioner urged all the parties to eschew violence and wait patiently for the election.

He assured government’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and unbiased election, stating that measures had been put in place to maintain law and order during the exercise.

The Commissioner expressed optimism that the new development would restore peace and stability in Azia community.
