The rich also do benefit more from subsidies in the advanced nations. Take solar for example. A rich dude with lots of it will enjoy more subsidy than the poor with a small solar system. I don't see the wisdom in cancelling it because of the rich. A flat subsidy on each litre only guaranty "you enjoy according to your usage level".

If you borrow from them they will tell you what to do
If you cannot manage yourselves as adults you will be treated as children
We stood around whilst Buhari borrowed our future away
The government then started printing money
Now food is ready
Don't blame the IMF look in the mirror
It is not only subsidy but you lose your independence when you borrow anyhow that is why we cannot take position on foreign affairs like Ukraine ,Israel.Niger etc

This is why america should be removed from World power... They dictate to people with the stupid agencies they created like NATO, IMF, UN and many more... Imagine IMF commanding Nigerians what to export and quantity you can export. If you don't do their bidding they will oust you from office. Either using scandal or money laundering method to scatter your legacy or they kill you using your own men like they did to that Libya man. That was the same stupid way they lured that idiot comedian in Ukraine with blockchain currency into believing he can fight with Russia. Russia that has been preparing for war since late 90s... What am praying for is for Nigeria to be sanctioned so that we can from their think and start functioning on our own... Even our neighboring countries hate us.

Poor people also benefit from subsidies. If not why are they paying triple the cost of transport. It is not until you own big car before you are a beneficiary of subsidy.

But the West has a strong social welfare system. It has unemployment benefits, welfare checks, subsided housing like the projects and council houses, Norway and Finland pays its citizens well. Are we less human that the highly educated, less populated western societies, that have safety nets which ensure society does not descend into anarchy

IMF ASKED YOU TO REMOVE SUBSIDIES WITHOUT ADEQUATE JOB PROVISIONS.
THESE WILL PROMOTE BRAIN DRAIN (JAPA)
THE PEOPLE YOU TRAINED FROM BIRTH TO 20 YEARS
WILL NOW MIGRATE EN-MASSE TO BECOME SLAVES IN WESTERN COUNTRIES.

HUMANS ARE THE NEW COMMODITIES
WHEN ABROAD THEY ARE USED FOR THE MORE MUNDANE MENIAL JOBS

WHILE THEIR OWN CITIZENS ARE FREED TO DO INTELLECTUAL ACTIVITIES THAT WILL LEAD TO NEW DEVELOPMENT IN THEIR COUNTRIES.
WHEN YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL WIFE AND YOUR MALE NEIGHBOR ADVISES YOU TO GO AND FIGHT AS A MERCENARY IN PALESTINE.
ALWAYS THINK..........THE MOST PRODUCTIVE AND DESIRED HUMAN CAPITAL IN THE WORLD IS YOUNG, EDUCATED PEOPLE FROM 20-40YEARS OLD.

NIGERIANS THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.
God will bless you... In fact I find it hard associating with people over there. Their Job is more important than anyone else. I used to chat a Naija america girl that time she never get job but as she don get job she no even send me again. Why are Nigerians so stupid and foolish thinking the west loves us... The fact that the Berlin conference they had in those days simply worked out still amazes me... They deserve five stars... Neocolonialism at his peak... They have limited our brains... This is even worse than before... Imagine shebi our forefathers knew they were been maltreated and Ill treated but we no know they will start lying to our faces and we keep saying it true...blame embezzlement on people, give us false news and globalize sporting events and entertainment... Fuel arguments on lie... We start cursing each other online... No unity amongst us... Bravo to them

This imf are indeed ruling many black Africa countries by proxy, they're not seeking the betterment of any Africa countries, why are they more interested in subsidy removal than Nigeria as a opec nation to have functionable refineries. #spit

This IMF people know nothing about Africa especially Nigeria and henceforth their advices should be reviewed severely and amended to suit us before we implement them.
Re: IMF: Why We Asked Nigeria To Remove Fuel Subsidy by Raxxye(m): 8:16am On Apr 20
IMF knows next to nothing on Nigerian economy. They would fail woefully if they were given Nigeria's economy to manage. Their advice, if followed, always have detrimental effect on Nigerians

God will deal with these wicked organizations called IMF and World Bank, why coming up with unintelligent argument of subsidy benefits only few people. Have they forgotten that transportation and energy is the soul of any nation. Even with the claimed that some have many cars, if you have 100 cars will you ride all at a time? How many of these thieves who scamed us through subsidy payments have been arrested and prosecuted? Or they are untouchable? but Nigeria masses should be punished for their sins of corruption? The IMF who are concerned with government having enough money to rum gpvernment, failed to look at waste in government spending; where a boredom is sank at 190 million naira instead of average of cost of 10 million naira, the cost of every contract in Nigeria by our government is super inflated, and is one of the highest in the world, these useless organizations will not set international standard for the price of our contract, it is only what benefited them and our stooge leaders they force us to implement, it is not their fault, it is the type and quality of leaders we have in Nigeria that allow that, that is why some African new leaders are moving away from European and American influence, because they do not mean well for Nigeria in particular and African Continent in general.

"The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has explained why it advised Nigeria to remove fuel subsidies, adding that the subsidy regime was robbing the poor for the rich."

So everyone thought until the reality lay ambush for everyone in the market. Now we all wished it was never removed.

Before entering into any relationship, know the difference between suggestion, advice and decision, and when they should appropriately be given and taken by the appropriate person.

JASONjnr:
The fuel subsidy removal is necessary, but what matters is how the money is used?

Ofcoz subsidy made life easy for Nigerians... But a certain people was embezzling the money and living large.

But Tinubu took it very personal and removed subsidy from everything. Now in charge of all the money.

Disbursing 50k to Nigerians is a very stupid thing to do.

Regulate price of goods in the market.... So that we can afford them. 50k feeding can only last for 5days or less!

So after removing subsidy, they will not embezzle again. Subsidy or not subsidy our politicians will always find their way of milking Nigeria. No plan for poor, poor should plan for theirself

grandstar:
The price of petrol needs to be deregulated as done with diesel and kerosene so the subsidy be done away with once and for all.

This will free up an extra 500bn monthly. With 50% going to the states and local gocernments, that would be an extra 250bn for them. This is on average 7bn per state.

The 250bn going to the federal government will reduce its borrowing need.

You forgot to include the #85 billion Naira that EFCC said Ganjuda is holding and the #75 billion Naira Yahaya Bello is also accused to hold....
Let's assume they are holding the monies for the Government.....

So how much is going to state Government now and
....maybe you should start a fresh .....sorry Sir

Okay!
Now that the Nigerian Government have heeded to your advise, what is the resultant effect of the subsidy removal on the poor.
Did you now know and notice that the subsidy removal did not help the poor instead the rich is getting better and richer
Because they can afford to buy anything anytime any day.
Now the State Government are living large with enough resources at their disposal from the subsidy removal without a commensurate infrastructural development in the states.

What do I know self
Re: IMF: Why We Asked Nigeria To Remove Fuel Subsidy by adicious(m): 9:22am On Apr 20
That's why some theories of Economics ends with ceteris paribus, meaning all things being equal. In the case of Nigeria, all things are not equal, both the rich and poor are using the petrol. We have a unique power challenge that has the poor own a small generator they use almost daily and this requires petrol. The smallest business, say pure water business needs petrol to chill the water. A tailor needs to power his electric machine and the market woman needs to grind her tomato and pepper and it requires petrol.

The issue is that politicians employ advisers based on political compensation and not based on academic qualification and competencies. Also, the government has so borrowed that they need to please those who are they are owing.

Without the corrupt practices enshrined into the subsidy policy, it was a good policy to boost SMEs and reduce the cost of living but all these deep and even the deeper use cases I didn't mention were not considered.

At the end, may Nigeria win.

Re: IMF: Why We Asked Nigeria To Remove Fuel Subsidy by Ejebleje: 9:31am On Apr 20
If you believe this lamba from the imf, well I will not blame you.

You see, Nigeria is a highly indebted nation , and this ill suggestion from the imf is a way of seeing to it that we can continue to service these loans here and there.

Why cut off the head because you have a headache?why can't the subsidy thieves be caught and executed so that the poor can actually breathe?

Most importantly, the movement of people ,goods and services is a very important component of economic growth and any this that stifles this, ultimately hampers economic growth.

It's a shame that in this country, we lack weak institutions and very highly unpatriotic leaders

Everybody knows the problem, but pretend not to see. Remove the criminals in government offices and businesses, kill corruption, ramp up production, ease the environment for people to get into business and production, but na lie, instead they make the manufacturing of any product in Nigeria very very hard and unprofitable, the import everything to satisfy their luxury lifestyles. How has subsidy removal helped the poor? Instead state governors and their families were busy changing allocations to dollars and hiding it, further pushing the dollar up. Now it's band A thieving they want to start.
