Pls Stop Sending Cars Without Locally Available Spareparts Down To Naija by volasunkan: 4:45am On Nov 20, 2011
TODAY I was at my auto mechanic's workshop to service my car but alas I met the man and his lieutenants brainstorming on a car that appeared so ravishing new and beautiful, the car was one of the new models of AUDI 2.8 SEDAN CAR.I must confess,I love the car and when I was told people are already bidding for the car and the owner of the car,a car-importer based overseas is breathing down their neck to please fix the car ASAP.That immediately got me worried,is there a ploy to sell the car with a hidden fault and the unfortunate buyer would then 'carry the cross'?
I enquired from my mechanic what is wrong with the car.I never expected the kind of response i got-"The car is nothing but a disaster,we have moved all around Lagos for its parts to buy the replacement but all to no avail"he thundered out of frustration.'I dont know what the man wants me to do,maybe he expects me to turn myself into a sparepart' He concluded. Seeing his mood and frustration I did not even bother continuing with the discussion until he said"Can you imagine that people are already bidding over a million for this useless car!,I pity whoever buys this(2.8L audi sedan car)." shocked shocked shocked

Pls my brothers and sisters, pls be more diligent in your enquiries about a particular brand of car and availability of spareparts locally before shipping cars down,I know that apart from the agony and financial loss it causes the eventual buyer,it is a huge environmental liability as most of those cars just liter the environment and trust Naijas, the buyer will find another suegbe and pass it on to until eventually the car is a complete environmental mess.Abeg, let us save our environment .God bless.

if the importer is seriosu - why cant he simply just buy the faulty part from the same abroad where he bought the car from?
Re: Pls Stop Sending Cars Without Locally Available Spareparts Down To Naija by volasunkan: 11:22pm On Nov 20, 2011
How does that amount to a solution in the long run?
I guess if you are a road user who ply our bad roads in nigeria, you know that auto parts replacement is not a one-off thing,it goes on on a continous basis, the real probem wont be addressed for as long as the part is not in the country.

The most important power is with the buyer. If a customer stops buying a product, the seller won’t sell it again. Simple!

Don't buy a car because it looks good, maintenance is the most important and must be considered before making the final decision to buy a car.
Re: Pls Stop Sending Cars Without Locally Available Spareparts Down To Naija by ALIF07: 3:31pm On Nov 21, 2011
I will strongly recommend that when buying a car, especially your first car, try to buy not just a very clean one but also the common and popular Nigeria brand-used cars. As this will save money and time.

My neighbour had similar issue with his chysler neon (or na Dodge neon) a car to behold. The car brain box was bad and he was unable to get the brain box after like 9 months of extensive search in Abuja, Kaduna and Lagos. He used different chysler neon brain box all to no avail, its either it wont supply power or it wont start the car. He had to send the brain box to united state. I even posted the issue on this site (nairaland) when i saw one brain box specialist dealer. As at that time, the brain box had lost in transit so i couldnt provide the serial number.
The car was grounded for more than a year before he eventually sold the car as scrap to Apo (Abuja spare part market) spare part dealer at a ridiculous and annoying price. after spending so much money on it.
Trust naija mechanics, they even told him they could replace the engine with Toyota engine and tberefore use toyota brain box grin grin grin grin grin

Best thing to do is to first check for availability of a car spare parts before buying it

u can buy such cars if you have 2 other cars for regular use and someone over there to help you get the part if needed. I can buy a luxurious car but i'll make sure its for occassions only. besides the regular serviced parts will be available in my yard just incase

i can conclude that he met backyard autoelectricians

if the ECU aka brainbox was dead all he need was and ECU thats doesnt require the communication with key

cars now days have keys thats talk to the ECU on the ignition barrel there is a ring of wire thats reads a code or frequence in key once they match that will let current to fuel pump

if they dont match the car will just crunk

so there were supposed to get an ECU that is code free

Simple Bone headed Nigerian mentality cool
There are lots of Audi parts available in Nigeria, op is probably dealing with some JJC shade tree mechanic who could not properly rotate tires if he had to grin
The Audi 2.8 is actually one of the easiest to fix out of all the Audi models, this goes to show how inadequate and unprepared those cheap mechanics are, grin

Volkswagen dealerships will have access to most basic Audi parts in Lagos and even at worse case you can contact some auto shipper to have a rare part shipped down to you,no big deal.Don't blame lack of parts, blame the lazy mechanics who will complain if they can't handle these relatively simple to fix cars.

@ZIM DRILL , please i have a problem with my 2007 honda accord. The ECU went dead and was changed by my mechanic. The new problem now is that the car batery runs down after 5-6 hours of being parked. i want to believe  it is the new ECU . The mechanic has not been able to trace the fault  to any known part. but i have a hunch it is the ECU . what do you think?
and are u in nigeria so i could contact you for possible solution? thanks

@ poster,

What made you think that the Audi quack mechanic was right; that the part he said was faulty and couldnt find a replacement, was actually what is faulty?

People! We are talking about Audi here that uses mostly BOSCH for their parts. Bosch, the most commonest parts in the auto world. Yet, someone is telling me he couldnt find the part. What a joke! Trust me, i believe thepart in question is electrical component. After all, how could he diagnose and detect the actual issue with the car when he may not know the name of the part.

The fact is that i dont believe that the car cant be fixed because the suspected part faulty cant be found.

I encourage Nigerians to keep buying cars like Audi, Saab and Saturn. If the trend continues, smart business people will see demand and start importing spare parts for these cars. Problem solved. We can't just limit ourselves to few brands when we can solve this little problem.

sorry bro am not in nigeria

i have seen many problems of ECUs here and i wonder what happens in nigeria here in UK  its rare for ECU to go dead, only that dealership rip people off when they lose key they charge £500 and above to change engine ECU and anti theft one

as for your problem something is left running or still get live feed from the battery even with the ignition off

tell what really happened to your ECU it cant just die unless there was a short wiring

ONE KEY THING a mechanic and auto electrician are different people both work with cars but a mechanic does mechanical while auto electrician does the electric

though most some african mechanics cover both which is not good if he was not trained to be an auto electrician he can damage electrics and are expensive to find problems and repair compared to mechanical problems

check common problem of ECU against your car model

http://www.ecutesting.com/ECU/ecu.html

you will see that most problem are direct link to the ECU its self but the ECU is just reporting FAULT found in sensors connected to it

see were it says COMMON ECU FAULTS --- click on AUDI you will find most common faults picked and show by the ECU but not saying the ECU its fault

also understanding the ECU and the imobiliser

you can make a copy of the key and open the doors manually but as long the key doesnt have the chip corespond with ECU the car will never start it will only crunk

Hi all, I write on behalf of Proxycart.com

There are hassle free ways you can get genuine Car or Equipment parts from the US. One reliable way is to follow the two steps below:

(1) First, go to www.autozone.com to get the true price of the car part. Please note that Autozone may not sell or ship to Nigeria.

(2) Next, go to www.proxycart.com and request the car part(s) you are looking for. Proxycart.com will send you a quote within 6 to 12 hours. Be sure to provide the correct information about the part such as part #, vehicle model, make, year of manufacture etc. Beside cars, equipments, or parts, you can also shop US online stores through Proxycart.com.  Serious inquiries please call (US) +18019800023 or (Nigeria) 08028489218

Nigeria so scared of trying new things, always want to to stick to old tried and tested method. This thread makes me wonder what kind of mechanic you took the car to? maybe one of those local rass mecho who learnt it from one village guy who inturned learnt his trade from a local mechanic in Warri. grin.  Audi's are one of the best  reliable cars in the world, German cars are known for their durabilty and reliability, though their parts dont come cheap so its better to buy the earlier models than going for  latest range!  Common sense should tell you that if something parts are needed , take it to an approved Audi dealer  with diagnostic  tools and expect to pay premium rate because its a premium car not like your Jap cars. I drive an Audi A6 in Nij and if anything goes wrong  i am not going to take it to a rass mecho, because i have the tool to diagonise it myself and then buy the parts and take it to the Approved garage or atleast a mechanic who dont  operate on side streets.

well said @ mencer, buy honda or toyota for peace of mind my a$$. I will take a German car over Jap or American anyday.
Re: Pls Stop Sending Cars Without Locally Available Spareparts Down To Naija by Fhemmmy: 2:28pm On Nov 22, 2011
There is no ride in Nigeria with parts in Nigeria, all parts are imported, so all that needed is the importer sends such parts to Nigeria and that is where relationship matters, when you sell a car to someone, it is not the end, you have a relationship that anytime any day a part for the ride or even another ride is needed, you help to source and send it to Nigeria.

have you ever wondered what kinda parts are even available in Nigerian market? Most are junks and useless too.

I'm struggling to make sense out of your post here.

What exactly was wrong with the car? And what model of Audi is it? All you've said is it's an Audi sedan / saloon with a 2,8 V6 engine. The Volkswagen Passat uses the same engine as the Audi A4 / A6. Yet mechanics are so ignorant. I recently had an enquiry for a replacement 2,8 V6 30V motor, for a 2003 Volkswagen Passay. I responded to the enquiry, I have two Audi A6 2003 models. The guy contacted his "mechanic" then discouraged him from buying. Stating the engine must be a VW Passat 2,8 V6. So ignorant, he fails to realise the engines are EXACTLY the same!

This is one of the reasons things never improve in Nigeria. Everyone is all too keen to go the El Cheapo route, patronize roadside mechanics that don't know one end of a spanner from the other. And just so you know, spare parts are not manufactured locally in Nigeria. They are all imports. A 2010 Range Rover Sport will have parts imported, the same way a 1999 Toyota Camry would. It's just that in terms of used parts, the Toyota will have a wider market.

Not everyone in Nigeria, even those that are not too car savvy want to drive a bog standard Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Nigerians need to move with the times, things are evolving. The same feeling was the norm many years ago, when automatic transmission was new. No mechanic was prepared to touch them. Today, it's the preferred choice in Nigeria. Those that are prepared to run expensive, modern imports in Nigeria can definitely afford to purchase their parts and accessories from the country of their car's origin. It's common sense. Nigerians need to stop taking everything their "mechanics" tell them, and do some research on their cars themselves. Most Nigerian mechanics that advice you on what car to buy are only doing so, so as to retain you as a customer. If they're used to working on I4 2,2 Toyota Camry, the moment you purchase a 2009 Chrysler 300C 5,0 HEMI, they know they've lost you as a client.

Lastly, cars are not as unreliable as Nigerian mechanics make out. Even the most basic, economy model, like a TATA Nano will be reliable, and pretty much vice-free. The problems with cars invariably start once they land in Nigeria, go in for a routine oil change, a light bulb, then suddenly it needs injectors, transmission, fuel pump and sensors that "are not available in Nigeria.

When i saw this thread, i thought the car being talked about was a Chevy Corvette or Maseratti Quattro BUT an audi? Of all cars? How can you say Audi parts aren't available? Furthermore, anyone using great cars like BMW,Audi,Bentleys etc should know better when choosing their auto-mechanics. How can you take a car that is totally computerized and give to a mechanic who can't read simple instruction manuals?

Instruction manual keh! You dey go far sef! Ask that mechanic the name of the part he claimed he had searched in the whole world without finding. Believe you me, he wont know. In fact, i dey go far sef! Ask that mechanic to show you or point at injectors on that engine. Its so obvious that he would point at something else, maybe the throttle body. Clowns!

A long list of commentaries by predatory conmen/car dealers cum businessmen and Naija diaspora,I could not expect anything else. You can theorise and blame everything including the competence of the mechanic cos you think the auto-mech is plain stupid lamenting his ordeal in getting a replacement part for an audi undecided!
I am not surprised at all!
Abeg,to you all that is important is profit and nobody should spoil your 'show'.

You people should visit home and find how easy it is to take your hard-earned money to begin to order parts that Nigerian roads will thoroughly disgrace even after spending a fortune scanning, wasting precious time at the mechanic's place and the distruption caused by a disappointing car!

You either bring cars with parts that are available locally or one of you with owo-igbo should bring down these scarce parts to flood the market or just keep quiet!

I don't think the "mechanic" is plain silly, I can confidently state he is. You just accepted without questioning what the elusive Audi part was. Oh gosh, I forgot - the "mechanic" wouldn't even know the name.

More baseless ranting - was this "Audi Sedan 2,8" your car, by any chance? These cars will keep coming in, whether you like it or not. No one is pushing you to buy one. Simply stick to a 1998 Toyota Camry, if that's your bag. No one's going to keep quiet on your say-so. You brought this topic up for debate, and must have expected varying responses.
