How old were you when you started coding ?

Lol...when you started coding doesn't necessarily corelate with competence. Constant, deliberate practice is what builds competence.

For example, I wrote my first line of code in BASIC over 30 years ago. Today my coding is really bad as I stopped coding in 2013. Not like I was consistently coding before then

I think i was 15 when i wrote my first hello world on html (that was like 1998). i was intrigued that i could actually create something on a pc rather than just using a pc.

Its been over 25 year, now at 40, i have decided to really learn coding by challenging myself with projects and things i want to be build for myself and for the office i work for, weird i know, but for me it seems i have been running away from this and it finally hit me to just freaking do it already and not avoid it anymore.

15 I only learnt coding because I thought I could contribute to Playstation emulator development, but when I get a full-time job, I'm taking a course on emulation just for fun. Tired of webdev, I started with C++ and it was tough but now I can at least make much sense of it

Normal Nigerian issues, light, laptop and all. But I always had a tablet, so I spent an unhealthy amount of time reading alot of programming books, from Java, PHP, JS, ActionScript and alot. There's was a time I'd read at least 3 hours for a year.

I liked reading back then, but not as much as today

7 years , got my first laptop from my grandfather who was a professor at the UNN , laptop was a shitty one , couldn't play Wolfenstein on it


My grandfather had a copy of K&R and IBM ASM which I learn C, my grandpa taught me ranging from linear equations to differential equation, made my first program which was a rainbow output using TurboC thank God for Borland


In secondary school, I was a loner , no friends tho I attracted girls because I knew maths and they came to me to tutor them which i would shy away and ignore them probably signs of autism, made huge use of computer lab in secondary school, back then students pay to use the internet in my school , 50 naira was the least amount

When I was 15/16… me and my friends we used to mod 2go.jar back in the day… fast forward to today? We running the fintech space in Nigeria … + I’ve worked at FAANG and I just go to rave parties and buy my family anything they want.. I’m really young so it’s just quarrel and fights here or there from my girlfriend about why I love cheating so much but she loves me despite my imperfections… should I also add that I have an online business too that gives steady return… rn life becomes very boring.. I miss the days where I was struggling to build stuff… now I’m actively involved in AI research for a startup here in San Francisco… my advice for the newbies is to learn how computers work and build stuff!!!! Don’t be a slave for Anyone.. keep building!

Edit to add: I remember Qtguru from back in the day … his username was different and dude used to look younger and he was a big noob back then. Glad to see he’s doing great…
not going into much details but I used to run a big forum I built with my friend back then but forums went the way of the dodo bird but somehow nairaland has managed to survive… but nairaland traffic will never be like what it was in 2012-2019

No… I’ve been coding every day… actively engaging in community…. Helping solve code problems in forums and learning from others… I put fire in the flame constantly. It’s part of life.

I was 16 or 17 then, I wanted to build games. Everything I saw was centered towards webdev I wasn’t really feeling it.

I don't think the traffic has dipped much fr then. A lot of 2012-2019 traffic was driven by politics. And not much has changed since then
