Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia said on Thursday in Umuahia that government planned to establish "Liberation Farms" where unemployed youths would be engaged.

He made this known during a one-day interactive forum organised by the state Ministry of Agriculture for traditional rulers and other stakeholders.

The governor said the farms would be set up by the government in collaboration with the state's Oil Producing Area Development Commission and the Ministry of Local government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

He said that funds would be injected into the project while the youth farmers would be granted loans and urged traditional rulers to sensitise and mobilise their subjects to take advantage of the initiative.

The governor commended the ministry for initiating various agricultural programmes, which, he said, had the capacity of ``creating massive jobs for our citizens, who are unemployed. "

He solicited the assistance of traditional rulers in making land available for the execution of government agricultural development programmes in their communities.

"This is for the collective good of the people and it deserves your full support and endorsement. "

In his speech, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Chief Ike Onyenweaku, said the forum was designed to enlighten the monarchs "on the agricultural revolution going on in the state. "

"Traditional rulers are the custodians of the people's culture and their roles in creating the needed peaceful environment for any enterprise, particularly agriculture, to thrive need to be stressed."

He said the Liberation Farms would lead to the establishment of livestock, fisheries and crop-based farms in the 17 local government areas, based on the prevailing environmental factors in each area.

The commissioner said that the governor had mandated the relevant officials "to sign the necessary documents to pave way for the state to access the N1 billion agricultural loan".

He assured the monarchs that only genuine farmers would benefit from the loan, after a thorough verification and inspection of their farms.

Dr. Chiedozie Egesi, a cassava breeder at the Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, delivered a paper entitled "Cassava Green Revolution in Nigeria: the place of Abia".

Egesie highlighted the roles of the traditional rulers in the current Federal Government's agricultural transformation agenda, including the donation of lands, mobilisation of communities into forming cluster farmers, among others.

Eze John Akaniro, Chairman Traditional Rulers' Council thanked the government for organising the forum, noting that it came at the appropriate time when farmers were warming up for the next farming season.
