Peter Obi Vehemently Condemns Lagos-Calabar Highway As A Misplaced Priority by emkz: 2:54pm On Apr 30
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, took to his verified Twitter handle to lampoon the Federal Government for continuing the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

In his tweets, he rued the economic and job losses, asking the government to focus on maintaining existing highways instead of engaging in non-essential projects.

Lagos-Calabar Highway: FG adamant on a Misplaced Priority.

Contrary to reason and the necessity for compassion in public policy, the federal government has commenced the controversial Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.

The outcry against this project has been overwhelming due to the current situation in the country. However, reports as of yesterday indicate that demolition of businesses and residences in the designated right of way for the project has commenced from the Lagos end.

The sight of this insensitive demolition is heart-wrenching. Livelihoods are being wiped away, lifetime investments are being wasted, and jobs are disappearing as bulldozers roar through. The homes of the elderly are being overturned by the power of bulldozers.

This hasty flag-off defies the widespread outcry by the public, especially business and property owners directly affected by the project. Nobody knows the outcry that will accompany this project as it progresses towards poor rural landscapes.

Thousands of jobs are about to be lost, with investments above $200 million at risk. Over 100,000 jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector face imminent extinction, along with 80 small businesses and their 4000 mostly youth employees.

At a time of rampant unemployment, the government is embarking on a job-losing project. The economic losses currently observed are primarily limited to the initial kilometers in the Lagos area. However, the 700 km stretch of this road will pass through rural regions where affected individuals lack the voice, power, or influence to assert their rights. Significant sections of the public have questioned the process preceding the project's approval, yet the government remains deaf to reason and caution.

While acknowledging the economic value of the road, its conception dating back to Tafewa Balewa's time, several parameters have changed. Insecurity and poverty are rampant, placing this project lower on today's national priorities.

It's time to question the rationale and timing of this and similar projects. The nation is in its worst economic state in history, with poverty and hunger spreading. The basic necessities of life are beyond reach for most Nigerians.

This is a moment when a committed government cannot embark on non-essential projects. Existing highways urgently need maintenance, and insecurity makes travel unsafe.

Just a few days ago, many lives were lost, and over 70 vehicles were burned in a fuel tanker explosion that occurred on the East-West road in Rivers State. This tragic accident was primarily caused by the extremely poor condition of the road, which has been neglected for years and urgently needs attention. Our economy is struggling, and our health institutions are ill-equipped. Why embark on an expensive new highway project when there are close to 50 abandoned federal highway projects across the country?

The urgent necessities are nationwide security, poverty eradication, healthcare, and education, especially for the poor and underprivileged. It's not too late to discontinue the Lagos-Calabar highway project.

We cannot afford another expensive abandoned project. Nigeria's urgent development needs are more real and essential. We do not need landscape decoration escapades. -PO

How did Peter Obi arrive at these statistics? Which industries employ 100,000 persons and what exactly are their jobs?

At a time of rampant unemployment, the government is embarking on a job-losing project. The economic losses currently observed are primarily limited to the initial kilometers in the Lagos area. However, the 700 km stretch of this road will pass through rural regions where affected individuals lack the voice, power, or influence to assert their rights. Significant sections of the public have questioned the process preceding the project's approval, yet the government remains deaf to reason and caution.
Has Peter Obi seen the plan to know where the road will pass? Is Peter Obi aware that land does not really belong to any individual but is owned by government and they can collect at anytime and pay compensation? Is he also aware that the coastal highway is a job-creating venture for artisans, masons, vulcanizers, food sellers, drivers and so on?

While acknowledging the economic value of the road, its conception dating back to Tafewa Balewa's time, several parameters have changed. Insecurity and poverty are rampant, placing this project lower on today's national priorities.
Infrastructural development is also a way to address insecurity as jobs are created. It is also a way to tackle poverty. If Peter Obi is slightly intelligent, he'd do proper research before attacking progress.

Was it the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway that cause the accident on the East-West Road? If the highway was not being constructed, would it have prevented the accident?

The urgent necessities are nationwide security, poverty eradication, healthcare, and education, especially for the poor and underprivileged. It's not too late to discontinue the Lagos-Calabar highway project.
The highway would help to tackle poverty through job creation, and help in education with students doing internships with construction companies.

We cannot afford another expensive abandoned project. Nigeria's urgent development needs are more real and essential. We do not need landscape decoration escapades. -PO
Has the project been abandoned?

If anyone from the Niger-Delta comes across the thread, please remember that some of you voted for Peter Obi. Peter Obi has demonstrated he is against the progress of the Niger Delta communities. The bulk of the funds for running our economy comes from the Niger Delta. But he says a big project to criss-cross the Niger Delta is a misplaced priority.

Note that the US spent their way out of recession through the New Deal which focused on massive infrastructural development across board, including roads. There is no nation interested in progress that is currently not engaged in one form of infrastructural development or the other. But the one which is 60 years old overdue in Nigeria, Peter Obi is fighting it, simply because he lost election.

If he didn't build anything meaningful in Anambra, I think it is disingenuous to fight against something being built through the Niger Delta. Thanks to Tinubu's ingenuity, Lagos is undergoing massive infrastructural development and embarking on an audacious railway project which the likes of Rufai Oseni would condemn.

Peter Obi doesn't want the progress for the Niger Delta. He just wants to get the votes and use anti-developmental and archaic ideas to ruin this country completely.

Only vote for those who want progress to be in your land. With this tweet, Peter Obi has shown he is not interested in that.

As for the Landmark CEO who has been all over the place making noise, can he show us documents where the shorelines and beaches in his location were ceded to him? If he violated the right of way, it is evil for him to complain. The best thing to do was to meet and find ways to relocate his business or shift to an area where the coastal highway won't pass. When I travelled through Accra-Cape Coast highway, part of which was adjacent to the ocean, it was a beautiful sight with the blue waters! Guess what? Beaches still functioned!!

Just to add, a road network is also a delight for businesses. Food can easily be transported from rural areas to urban centers and those in rural communities would make good money.

But Peter Obi does not want this.

Hypocrisy.

When he was demolishing business and properties in Anambra to make way for a road, even a Brewery that was a competitor to his Own brewery was not spared.

Where was he when Amaechi was building a funny rail line to Niger Republic? It's when he realises more development is coming to the Niger Delta via the coastal highway then.his blokos begin dey stand in opposition.

Idiots will soon come to cry their salty tears on this thread.
They saw the increase of customs rate and they avoided the thread.
They saw the LIES about a $500m investment, and they avoided the thread.

But now, an honest man has spoken . You'll soon see them scurry out like rats to cry, wail, roll on the floor and pour ashes on their empty heads.

1, 2, let the tears begin, ladies and gentlemen.

Highly misplaced priority... The only question I have for Thièfnubu and his brain dead zombies is;

They should show me where this road project will pass through in Rivers State and name the location..

Lagos shoreline is totally different from what is obtainable in Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers State. Travel and see things yourself.

Are they going to build the coastal highway on swampy mangrove forest or in the creeks?

Yabaleft, a patient has escaped. Kindly do the needful.

Your president has been blundering, lying and making life miserable for every Nigerian, but you are more concerned with the sayings of an honest man. You can see that you, yarimo and helineus are children of the corn, and you will stop at nothing until Nigeria is brought to its knees.

Cowardly rats.

Same way he was demolishing houses and businesses in Anambra to make way for highway.

Hypocrite.

Dear @PeterObi

It appears you have allowed your electoral loss to convert you into a full blown pathological liar and a desperate man on a mission to always deceive.

How on earth would you say that over 100,000 jobs are about to be lost because of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project. How many times do you need to be told that the Landmark beach resort for instance, is not going to lose any of its buildings. Landmark has no building on the beach itself apart from chairs, tents, astro turfs etc. The Landmark towers, Landmark Apartments, their event centre and shopping arcade, are NOT affected by the demolition.

In fact the beach that is going to form part of the road is within the federal government's right of way, which makes any structure on that path an illegal structure. Are you saying if you are President, you will cede the federal government's right of way to any developer?

Meanwhile, as Governor of Anambra State, you demolished part of Premier Brewery in Onitsha to make way for road reconstruction and you said at the time that any building that stands in the way of road construction will be brought down with no compensation. You did not remember COMPASSION IN PUBLIC POLICY then or the effect on the business of Premier Brewery. What changed now? Your hypocrisy and short memory needs to be studied in a Philosophy school honestly.

In case you don't know, the value the Lagos-Calabar coastal road will bring to that corridor after construction far outweighs whatever structures that will be demolished. This is not even hard to comprehend. A new beach front will definitely emerge and tourism will be greatly boosted. It is now obvious that you are not capable of grand visioning. You only see the present.

If previous administrations in Lagos were only looking at the present with no grand vision, Landmark will not even have a place to erect his investments in the first place. The Lagos great seawall made it possible. The coastal road is a boulevard like no other within Lagos, and your wailing cannot stop it. I understand that you are a minimalist that thrives on doing the barest minimum with poor quality as your watchword, so, I'm not totally surprised that the scope of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road is shocking to you.

It's even amusing that you're complaining that the project is progressing at a fast pace and yet insinuating that the project will take 30 years to be completed or likely to be abandoned. Do you even listen to what you say sometimes?

My advice to you is just to sit back, relax and watch as Engr. Dave Umahi delivers what you think is impossible. Action is better than cho cho cho.

I also think you are threatened by the rising profile and undeniable competence of Minister of Works, Dave Umahi and the reality that he will one day become the first president of Nigeria from the South East in the 4th Republic while you take your place as one of most dangerously deceitful and bitter politician to have ever graced Nigeria's political landscape.

Waste of resources it is. Why not use the money to create more sea ports to decongest lagos port. Create one in Ondo, modernise the one at Koko in delta state and another one in the S/E. The ROI would have been massive.

But he won't do that because his company hitech would lose out of the project. He won't see anything to eat.

This project was hastily done and we all know why

Don't forget there is a east-west road yet to be completed, which connects Niger Delta cities to Lagos

There is high poverty and suffering among the masses but government's priority is speedily awarding trillions of naira worth of road construction

The evil fake lovers of Nigeria will always support anything that makes Nigerians suffer anyway. They supported Buhari to ruin Nigeria for 8 years and they'll support anything that Tinubu does to put Nigerians into more suffering

It's a misplaced priority.
Construction of rail way too.

The main focus of the government should be
1. building more refinaries to reduce the price of petroleum since it's obvious that it's the mainstay of our economy and has multiple effect on our economy.
2. Working toward providing constant electricity. The growth of our economy and busnesses depends largly on this.

Any other thing can come after these two is taken care of.

You'd argue that Peter Obi won the election. Even Peter Obi himself does not believe he won the election. It is characteristic of a supporter of someone who came 3rd in an election and claimed 1st, but could not prove it because he didn't believe in it. If he believed he came 1st, why was he asking that the candidate who came 1st be disqualified for alleged double nomination of his running mate, which turned out to be a blatant lie? If he believed he came 1st, why was he dying about IREV? Didn't his party agents have their own results? IREV is a viewing portal and not a collation center. If he believed he won, why didn't he present his results from his party agents from the collation center?
