The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has alleged that Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, is inciting people of the southeast, especially those who are not well informed, against the government.

Umahi claimed that Obi would not fight for the people even after getting them into trouble.

He made the statement on Wednesday while speaking during an event to compensate property owners affected by the Lagos- Calabar coastal road prospect.

The exercise was organized by the Federal Ministry of Work.

The 700-kilometre coastal highway has been enmeshed in controversy following the demolition of Landmark Beach Resort, valued at $200 million, to create a right of way for the project which is estimated to cost the federal government N15 trillion.

After the demolition, a visibly worried Paul Onwuanibe, the Group CEO of Landmark, told BusinessDay that about 70 percent of the beach was destroyed by the government bulldozer, describing the action as "insensitive."

"What is left of these businesses are the rubbles you can see (in video clips he captured while the demolition was going on). Those are people’s investments and means of livelihood reduced to mere rubbles; so many jobs have been lost and many Nigerian families are in for it," Onwuanibe said.

On his part, Obi slammed President Bola Tinubu’s administration for going on with the controversial Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project in defiance of public outcry.

The presidential candidate expressed displeasure that the government is embarking on a job-losing project at a time of rampant unemployment.

However, Umahi insisted there was no inhumanity meted to Landmark and that the matter should be buried because he was actively involved.

The former Ebonyi State Governor alleged that Obi goes around to condemn people, thereby bringing judgment upon himself.

"But look at me, by the human face of the renewed hope agenda administration, we are even paying for people who are illegally staying on the coastal line, and don’t have valid infrastructure and valid documents. That is mercy, that’s mercy… You know some people darken counsel without knowledge. You know there’s the devil in the details.

"When you condemn people, you bring judgment upon yourself. And that is what he (Obi) has done. And I think he’s inciting some of the south east people that are not well informed. He is inciting them. And gets them into trouble. And he doesn’t go to fight for them. Wisdom is a defence. And I want our people to have wisdom because I am involved.

"There’s is no inhumanity meted to Landmark, that matters should be buried because I was there. And so we fought everything possible. Even some people donated property to save his two big infrastructures. That’s appreciation. But some people have taken sides along with him to play politics.

What Peter Obi is trying to do is politics of populism. He realizes that the social media mob is sympathetic to the Landmark CEO who encroached on government land, and he decided to initiate a Twitter rant yesterday condemning the project.

To tell you how dangerous it is, some people are now asking investors not to invest in Lagos and a dangerous ethnic dimension has entered the conversation.

Landmark is one of several businesses and why are other businesses silent?

Looking at what was demolished, see picture below; please how does that amount to $200million investment? Quantity surveyors and valuers, please give a fair assessment of the value of that swimming pool and temporary shanties.

While I think Umahi went too far in saying Peter Obi is inciting Igbos, I think it is important for Peter Obi to inform himself of the implications of some of his submissions in the public arena. Nigeria is too fragile to play this ethnic game because of elections.

What many are reading is him fighting for his brother's investment, whipping up mob sentiments and misrepresenting facts.

Until now, Landmark has not proved to the social media that they own the land. They are saying shift the project away so I can illegally stay on the land. That is the illegality Peter Obi supports.

Apparently, the most expensive asset there is the swimming pool.

From the internet, the cost of a swimming pool is as follows;

Acrylic Pool ₦12,000,000 – ₦60,000,000
Concrete Pool ₦3,000,000 – ₦12,000,000
Fiberglass Pool ₦1,500,000 – ₦5,000,000
Vinyl-lined Pool ₦1,500,000 – ₦3,500,000
https://viscorner.com/costs/cost-of-swimming-pool-construction-in-nigeria/
Let's say each gazebo costs ₦500,000. There are about twenty of them there. That works out to about ₦10,000,000. I see three buildings. Let's put them at the cost of ₦20,000,000 each. Assuming the swimming pool costs ₦80,000,000 to build + ₦10,000,000 for gazebos and ₦60,000,000 for building, that works out to ₦150,000,000. Using an exchange rate of USD$1 = ₦1,263.273; that works out to USD$120,000. Okay, let's use the exchange rate of the naira to the dollar as at six years ago, since the CEO of Landmark claimed it was a six year investment. Obviously, prices were way cheaper then, but let us still use today's prices. That ₦150,000,000 works out to about USD$450,000 using an exchange rate of ₦333 to the dollar which obtained as at six years ago. Experts can argue for inflation and price fluctuations.

Clearly, the costing shows that the investment demolished is between 0.225% to 0.06% of the $200m investment claimed by the Landmark CEO. Of course, many bought it and ran with it.

At this time, the Landmark CEO owes the government an apology and owes the mob on social media an apology for misleading the public through social media.

Engaging in ethnic bigotry has become the stock-in-trade of the Tinubu administration.

Umahi, the works minister, is now resorting to bigotry for a project he doesn't know in what decade it will be completed.

But Atiku didn't incite any tribe when he first described the project as a highway of fraud.

What about his kinsmen that don't want to have anything to do with the druggie and certificate forger? Are the Igbos the ones instigating them too? Stupid efulefu!

Investment is good and no investor would be happy with what happened to Landmark. Every investor must consider the long-term safety and sustenance of their investment before choosing a location and committing resources. Unfortunately, Nigeria is where ethnicity is exploited and politicians kill businesses of their opponents.

For a people who claim to be the best friends and brothers of the SS, one can not but see their stinking duplicity with the way they all came out to oppose this project.

One will expect that as "brothers" to SS people that they often claim they are, it is expected that they will support this project but alas this is not the case.

The coastal highway project has allowed their mask to slip and exposed them as the greatest enemies of progress to the SS .

I pondered on why this will be the case. Even Buhari's rail project to Maradi, Niger Republic did not illicit such bickering and opposition from these people.

So why are they opposed to this project?.

The answer is simply because they see this project as both a game changer for the economic fortunes of the SS people which they need to be wallowing in poverty so as to repackage either their biafra poison or Ibo presidency as the only panacea.

Secondly and most importantly , the route of this project is a call of concern to the Zikists and Biafrists as the design has basically opened up the SS directly to the SW and paraventure Nigeria bypassing the SE route. To them this is seen as cordoning the SS from the SE and thereby severing the forced colonial heritage of the blighted old eastern Nigeria which is their template for an Ibo state Biafra !

Peter Obi is a tribalist and has always been right from his time in Anambra as governor.

1. If he is not dividing his fellow ibos like the way he deported Ebonyi people from Anambra in 2011 or did not allow non-anambrans to contest in any election even for leadership of market positions,

2. And if he can't divide within the Ibo clans, he would pitch them against other tribes like he tagged Ngige a Yoruba candidate during the governorship election,

3. and if he can't find a way to alot in tribalism, he would divide people along religious lines like the Anglican vs Catholic fight he created in Anambra.

But you guys are now slowly retracing your steps from opposing this project to focusing on using the demolition of landmark as another pity piss contest.

It is only your own mouths and actions that will be used against you . And so far , your opposition to this project has exposed you and your Obi as the real enemies of the SS and her progress.

Pls continue .

Good question.

They needed to stop appearing as enemies of progress to the SS by brazenly opposing the project . So they needed another rallying point to demarket the project as an excuse to hurt Ibo investments in Lagos .

They are now saying the project in its entirety is fake and that it was only conceived to demolish Ibo properties along the Lagos section of the route despite the Oniru family of Lagos being the ones who have lost most from this project demotion phase .
