The West African country of Nigeria is currently the largest producer of Sorghum on the continent, and 2nd in the world after the USA.

Sorghum (aka guinea-corn, broomcorn or great millet) is a gluten-free tropical cereal grain with scientific name Sorghum bicolor used for food, ethanol production and animal feed.

-- Ọkà bàbà or Pòròpórò in Yoruba
-- Dawa or Jero in Hausa
-- Ohi in Igbo.

Sorghum grows in virtually all the 36 States in Nigeria but some States produce more than others.

Major sorghum producing states are Plateau, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, Bauchi, Zamfara, Benue , Kogi , Nassarawa and Taraba.

It appears, discovering oil in Nigeria was the beginning of woes to the country. Because, all attention shifted from agriculture and other natural resources to crude oil 🛢 only.

Na oil make Big company like Ajaoku Steel Company no dey function. Now, we need to build concrete roads with imported Iron rods bought with dollars.

Indeed, broomcorn is an unusal word, but really logical.

The reason is that sorghum has quite stiff panicles (flower branches which divide into sub-branches) that make it very useful in making brooms and brushes.
