The Ogun State government has taken delivery of 10 lorry loads of textbooks to boost its intention to provide free and qualitative education to pupils and students in the public primary and secondary schools.

A statement by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Information Officer, Kayode Oduyebo, said that one of the contracted publishing firms delivered 117,000 textbooks which covered subject areas like JSS English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies and Yoruba while SSS subjects already supplied covered subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Government, Physics and Literature in English.

The books were received by the Director of Curriculum Development and Evaluation, Mrs Kike Akinwande,on behalf of the state commissioner, Mr Segun Odubela.

The acting Managing Director/Chief Executive of Longman publishing firm, Mr Fred Ijewere, noted that the exercise was in fulfillment of Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s campaign promise of providing free and qualitative education to students in public primary and secondary schools in the state.

Mr. Ijewere said that his company was part of the success story being recorded in the state and urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the books.

“This is laudable project; we should commend governments for providing free education to students in the State. Education is the bedrock of any nation and any investment in education is a worthy investment. Teachers and students are however admonished to make judicious use of the books. This is the only way Government can be encouraged to do more,” he added.

It would be recalled that the state government had signed a contract worth N1.8 billion with some reputable publishing companies to supply text books to be distributed free for all its students in primary and secondary schools across the state.

What's the point of textbooks if people are hungry ?

1.8 billion for textbooks, do the books have diamonds in them ?

Is it not easier to give credit where due and move on till you find a 'hunger' thread to vent? It says a lot about Nigeria when the instinct of many of its people is to first attack everything and everyone. Education, in case you don't know, is the cornerstone of society. Everything revolves around it. In the case of Nigeria where the sector is failing, it is paramount for us to praise every genuine effort geared towards the provision of quality education.
