Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has officially withdrawn her lawsuit against Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, concerning his decision to marry off 100 orphans from his constituency.

Speaking to reporters, Minister Kennedy-Ohanenye explained that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Speaker and traditional rulers from Niger State, is currently verifying the ages of the girls involved to ensure they meet the legal age requirements for marriage.

She emphasized that the Ministry's primary focus will now shift towards empowering young girls and addressing the needs of those affected by insecurity in the state.

The controversy began last week when Speaker Sarkindaji announced his plans to marry off 100 orphans, presenting it as a measure to alleviate their suffering.

This announcement triggered widespread national outrage and prompted Kennedy-Ohanenye to file a suit and petition the Inspector General of Police.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), particularly the Kano State Chapter led by Chairman Malam Hassan Indabawa, strongly criticized the Minister's actions.

Indabawa urged Kennedy-Ohanenye to withdraw her litigation, highlighting the need for Nigerians to respect cultural and traditional practices.

In a statement issued on Thursday night, Indabawa condemned the Minister's decision as harsh and hasty, arguing that it fell outside the purview of her ministry.

He accused Kennedy-Ohanenye of attempting to demonize a cultural practice and misrepresenting the Speaker's intentions.

Indabawa asserted that the Minister’s media campaign against the marriage was an attempt to vilify Sarkindaji, who was acting out of genuine concern for his constituents, many of whom are traumatized orphans due to banditry and insurgency.

The planned marriage ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 24, 2024.

Nigeria is a joke of the century.

Look what the president of El Salvador said about making national decisions

" you can't please everyone, but make sure you please the nation "

Fūck this minister. You see why Nigeria will never take women seriously?! Jennyclay come and see your fellow woman who should have stood her ground >:small.presusre she backed down! This is why women will forever remain second class citizens in Nigeria , because they lack conviction. angry

Forget all the internet noise few feminists like jennyclay makes online , Nigeria is a patriarchal country that's the fact.

This useless minister had a chance to take a stance the way other women have like Prof Dora Akunyuli , Okonjo Iweala , Aisha yesufu and others who have stood against monumental pressure yet stood for what they believed in .

Until Nigerian women are ready to be brave and stand against all odds they will forever remain amusement and item 7.

After all wasn't it not Toke who went with a delegation to Dubai and allowed herself to be labeled item 7?

And she proudly told the whole nation that she was virtually taken as an escort. grin

I’m pretty sure you were one of those insulting her yesterday. People should learn to pick their battles. It was wise of her to withdraw. Let her concentrate her actions on non sharia states and northern Christians. If the sharia states and northern muslims want to burn, let them burn. When they are ready to be civilized and move into the 21st century nobody will tell them.

The Imaams gave her 72hrs to withdraw the suit and she did. The fear of fatwa is the beginning of wisdom. She goofed, she should have first done her findings before making her threats. 18-25yrs are no kids.
