George Ike Okoye bounces back, warns PDP against extinction


A former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly(1999-2003)on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief George Ike Okoye, has bounced back into politics after some moment of recess.

Okoye who spoke with our correspondent exclusively in Awka, the Anambra State capital, called on the leadership of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to allow the party to die because of personal ambitions.

The first class graduate of Architecture of the University Nigeria ( Enugu Campus), described PDP as the foundation of democratic practice in Nigeria.

Okoye who was a presidential aspirant in the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2003 , said PDP as the only opposition party in Nigeria must not be allowed to fizzled out because of inordinate ambitions of some stakeholders.

He said the party leadership should sit down and restructure the party for better Nigeria rather than jumping into the so- called New Mega Party.

He said,“The leadership of the party is complacent; they are just rigimaroling, looking for direction. A mega Party cannot work in Nigeria today,the only thing the PDP needs now is to resolve its leadership challenges.

“If the government does the right thing commend it and criticize it when it does the wrong thing.We have a president today in Nigeria and I don’t think Bola Ahmed Tinubu is bad.

"Iam impressed by his performance so far,but PDP can provide a better alternative.

"The problem with PDP is credible leadership and once there is a credible leadership every other things will fall in place.

"PDP must democratize the process of who become its leaders. Why can’t the leadership emerge through a normal process that is accepted to all.

"The PDP should work on its internal democracy and come out with a credible leadership” he said

Okoye was adjudged one of the most intelligent lawmaker in his era by many.He survived serial attempts to recall him by the government of the time for his outspokenness.
