The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has said that the 2023 general elections opened a new vista in the adjudication of political matters and threw up things for the judiciary to review. He spoke at the opening of a two-day workshop for judges on the review of the 2023 election petition tribunals/court and appeals on Monday in Abuja.

He said the workshop provided an opportunity to review things that might have been done with the best of intention and professionalism. He said, “No doubt, the adjudication on the 2023 election petitions came with varied challenges that have to be critically assessed and reviewed in order to forge a much better way forward.

“In those areas we have done well, we can literally eulogise ourselves and strive to improve on them, as self-praise is no viler an offender than self-denial. As for those areas that our inadequacies are manifestly obvious, we have to properly address them and bring on board new methods and approaches that would whet our appetite for success.

We must intensify efforts in engaging in those activities that will earn us more accolades than villifications.”

Speaking on the pressure from political matters under the time frame provided by the electoral laws, he noted the kind of attention and emotions attached to political matters in Nigeria “have collectively made our work more excruciating, painstaking and sometimes endangering as we are occasionally exposed to threats, especially from some elements within the political fold.”

“But like I would always say, no amount of threat or intimidation should make a thoroughbred judicial officer deviate from the law and pander to public sentiments and emotions which are often misplaced,” he added.

Earlier, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, listed areas in the Nigerian constitution and the electoral laws that would require legislative review in preparation for the 2027 general elections to include sections 187 of the Nigerian Constitution, 1999; and sections 233, 246 and paragraph 285 of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Similarly, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said the review was necessary as the findings and recommendations would provide appropriate guidance for stakeholders going forward to the next electoral cycle.

Same cash and carry judiciary? A government controlled judiciary. Meanwhile, same judiciary and INEC that claimed it never knew about the widely publicized Tinubu’s Chicago drug crime( forfeiture of #460,000), certificate forgeries, identity theft, Alpha-Beta/bullion vans fraud scandals. So sad for a country.

Meanwhile, see how SA a country with working judiciary dismissed their former President ambition based on the law. Ironically this was on Nigeria's democracy day. While here, the most corrupt criminals are allowed to run for the highest public office of the country.

Weeping and crying are constitutional and huma rights, so keep wailing till 2039 when Tinubu would have handed over to Kashim Shettima and the Kanuri Wonder Boy would have completed his own two terms. Then you headless mob can go and face South South for the Southern ticket

Useless zombidients, they thought the CJN was talking about their agulu fraud. Rightly put, the lower courts have to do better on cases of political parties internal affairs and stop giving conflicting judgements against matters already settled by the supreme court. Kano and Plateau conflicting judgements must never happen again.

There's nothing like inadequacy after robbing people of their victory, gor example look at Plateau State where winners of the Senate, House of Reps and State Assembly were robbed of their victories in broad day light and nothing has been done to the corrupt judges.

Citizens have lost faith in the judiciary were you have put all your relatives and relatives of politicians as judges and judiciary workers leaving those without connections to watch their dreams of becoming judges on merit die an early death

The current CJN seems to me like the most corrupt and shameless since 1999

Is Justice Ariwoola telling Nigerians that it was a coincidence that his

1) Son got appointed to Federal High Court

2) Younger brother appointed as the Auditor General to NJC

3) Daughter-in-law elevated to Federal High Court
.
The manner the presidential ruling was handled sef ... God will judge corrupt judges.

Trust a criminal mind at your own perils. Very soon the evil seed they sow will backfire against them and their families.

No rule of law in Nigeria. Only the rich and evil poor control the law to favour them.
