University Of Uyo Not Recognized By Law, Says Senator Enang by cycline404(m): 11:32am On Nov 28, 2011
There is no law backing the establishment of the University of Uyo 21 years after it was proclaimed a federal university by the former military president Ibrahim Babangida, Senator representing Uyo senatorial district, Ita Enang has said.

Enang made the disclosure yesterday while speaking with newsmen at his residence shortly he held a consultative meeting with youth leadership of the area.

“There has been so many cases in court which have been thrown out because the University of Uyo is not a legal person and has no authority to award even degrees and no authority to exist in law.”

“When President Bagandida converted the former University through a proclamation, he did not start a new University, even the take-off grants have not been paid, and as of today we still have issues with some consultants who handled land acquisition because they too have not been paid,” he said.

He said, however, that president Goodluck Jonathan has sent a bill to the National Assembly seeking to legalize the former University of Uyo that had existed at the time which the federal government by the proclamation of former president Babangida did not do.

The Senator who revealed plans by the federal government to establish 11 new federal Universities in the country urged his people to impress on the president to consider establishing one federal University in Uyo and convert the existing back to its former status as a state University.
