Canada on Thursday criticized the decision of the Nigerian Senate to ban same sex marriage in the country.
The Canadian government said in a statement released by the country’s high commission in Nigeria that the bill would infringe on basic rights and fundamental freedoms of Nigerians.
“If the bill is passed into law, it would infringe on basic human rights and fundamental freedoms of some citizens, “the statement quoted Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, as saying on the issue.
He warned that his country would continue to condemn Nigeria's position on the matter at the Commonwealth and other international summits if it goes ahead to pass the bill into law.
The Senate had on Tuesday passed a bill banning same-sex marriage and prescribed 14-year jail term for offenders.
It also recommended 10- year sentence for individual or groups involved in the formalisation of such relationship in Nigeria.
While passing the bill, the Senate President, Senator David Mark warned Britain and other Western countries to stop their promotion of same sex marriage in the country.
