Love your neighbour as you love yourself

Meaning you only love your neighbor to the extent at which you love your self.

Love your neighbor as you love yourself was only used to say consider your neighbor as much human and important as you consider yourself, care for your neighbor.

However, the truth is that majority or all of us does not and almost cannot care about anyone as much as we care for ourselves. It is human nature, it also extends to almost every animal and self aware living thing. We have evolved to be selfish.

They say do to your neighbor as you want to be done to you, however this is flawed. Some people don't even treat themselves well or love themselves. Some people engage in different forms of self harm, self disrespect, etc.
If someone sometimes crave pain or torture, does it make it OK to mete this out on people, since they also want it for themselves?

The answer is no, just because you want something or find it OK does not mean the next sentient being also finds it OK or wants it.

From a logical perspective, the golden rule should be, be just, be considerate and good to yourself and other beings.
It requires reflection and logical reasoning, to contemplate and decide what is just, good and considerate. Something most humans are poor at, so it had to be spelled for them to just love their neighbor as they love themselves.

People want what's good for themselves.
Even masochist do not want to die. They'd love to be alive so they can continually feel pain they inflict on themselves, if at all

People at their core love themselves. They want the best for themselves. It's just that they do not want it for others but themselves. That's where hypocrisy is birthed


I'm sorry for my late response.

People at their core love themselves. Perhaps, however that should not be the foundation for mutual morality, respect and boundaries recognition, etc. Reason, consideration and cognitive empathy should be, I prefer a person treats me reasonably from a broader objective perspective of true justice and consideration, than to treat me how they want to be treated. The latter is a gamble, you don't know for sure how they want to be treated.
