Violence among couples has continued to greet pages of newspapers, magazines and airtime of radio and television in recent times. Before now, though, it was violence against women that made the headlines, now the trend is changing and very fast too.

Violence against men is fast gaining public attention. Also, Nigerian courts are today inundated with divorce cases, some of them arising from spousal battering. In some extreme cases, victims of domestic violence are not alive to either, seek redress in the court of law or tell their own story.

One of the recent and celebrated cases of violence against women was that of Titilayo Arowolo, a 27-year-old mother of one, who was gruesomely murdered allegedly by her husband, Kolade. The banker was alleged to have been axed to death in her matrimonial home in Isolo, Lagos. Her murder attracted reactions and attention of women/men, lawyers, human rights activists, religious bodies, most of whom condemned the criminal act and demanded the head of the suspect.

There is also a case of 28-year-old Deanne Igho, who was undergoing the mandatory one year National Youth Service in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Deanne was said to have had misunderstanding with her heartthrob, Sylvester Emezi, during which the latter allegedly pierced her eye ball and inflicted a deep cut on her eyelid with a sharp object. The violent attack occurred at about 2am.
The unlucky mother of one was said to have cried for help, but none came. Also, her pleas to the husband to rush her to the hospital fell on deaf ears, as he reportedly locked her in and left the house.
Bleeding profusely, it was said, Deanne banged on the door. Still no help. She made frantic phone calls. That, too, was to no avail. And she died! Her little baby, who was aroused by his mother’s cry, had his body stained with the blood from the wound.

Crimewatch checks revealed that Deanne’s parents initially kicked against their daughter’s relationship with Sly, as he was popularly called. Neighbours also disclosed how the deceased once sold her car for the family’s upkeep. At various times, Deanne had complained about her husband’s habit of coming home late in the night, and his uncaring attitude towards her and their son.
On the day she died, she had earlier gone to report to members of her family, how Sylvester usually returned home late, and expressed worry over the development. It was in the process of complaining to her husband about his attitude, that argument ensued between them. It further degenerated, they said, into physical assault and consequently, her death.

Also in Lagos, a 42-year-old woman, Helen Ademoye, was charged for killing her husband during a fight. Another woman, Mrs. Taiwo Samuel, also accused her husband of assault, threat to life, unlawful ejection from her matrimonial home and denial of access to her three children.
According to her, it is in her husband’s character to unleash physical, emotional and psychological torture on her, almost on a daily basis and at every slightest provocation. Crimewatch was also told how her husband forcefully ejected her from the house, without giving her the opportunity to take any of her property. He also has the custody of their three children, aged 12, nine and five years.
