The Nigeria media was abuzz this week with reports that Medical graduates from nine universities in Nigeria will no longer be able to obtain licenses to practice in the United Kingdom, following a decision by the UK's General Medical Council (GMC) to ban the higher institutions. Elombah.com was however told that is no longer the case as the problem that gave rise to the bad headlines have since been resolved.

The GMC, a body of independent regulators which registers medical doctors to practise in the UK, reportedly took the decision to bar graduates from the nine universities from writing PLAB. GMC says the schools no longer meet accepted standards of practice in the UK.

Information available to elombah.com indicates the schools had a problem with accreditation from the Medical and Dental council of Nigeria, MDCN, because of the population of the students vis-a-vis lecturer ratio.
This happened late last year. As an obligation, the MDCN informed the WHO who de-listed the affected schools.

This problem has been solved and the MDCN website has now been updated. See the MDCN website: http://www.mdcnigeria.org/

PLAB is the UK exam that enables non-UK Medical graduates to undertake post-graduate medical training in the country.

The affected graduates were those who graduated after December 10, 2010 from Ambrose Ali University, Ebonyi State University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, University of Jos, University of Nigeria and the University of Port Harcourt.

It also applies to those who graduated on or after April 1, 2010 from Igbinedion University College of Health Sciences and the University of Benin.

According to Jason Day of the GMC's press office, the schools were axed because they no longer meet the required standards for practise in the UK.

He added that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) had also advised that they suspend accreditation of some medical schools in the country.

“The decision only applies to students who graduated from those medical schools after the MDCN suspended their accreditation,” Day said.

The present reality is that this problem has been solved and the MDCN website has now been updated. Consequently below is a list of currently updated accredited medical schools as obtained from the MDCN website:

The WHO website though (http://avicenna.ku.dk/database/medicine/) has not been updated as bad news often makes the headlines quickly but they are very difficult to retract.

So they were banned simply becausei of teacher:student ratio. And some people were already rubbishing these schools.

Has the issue really been resolved because those schools in question have been prevented from admitting students into the medicine programme.

first of all. you must know that nairaland is a 419 website. And the story in the first place was not true. You can not bring a nigeria degree abroad without evaluation. and upgrade.

even people who have degrees over here cant find jobs. when some people get here they go back to school and discover the real truth. owning so much money , I know of someone who even committed suicide because the nigeria community abroad is mostly made of scam artist too. Who deceive. even nigeria churches also are in the trick of deceive.

Even a nigeria church organized program for nigeria immigrate. even when they know that this people would never get job in that, because they know the society requirement. Some people is because they have suffered and they want others to suffer the same. Even when I got abroad, one of the so call pastor now. I remember how he deceive me too. Alot of them tell lies and deceive and still go on the alter.

I dont know of the Uk. but I know it is hard everywhere. It is even better to start a business aboard. That way no man can fire you in your own business. The time and money people waste going , they can use it for business and this is common among the asia community and that is why they do very well.

If you start a business with $100,000 , you will make what a university graduate will make after 20 year experience in 1 or 2 years. why waste your time. i am not in this world to impress anyone.
