The Arewa Renaissance Group on Thursday in Kaduna asked the Christian Association of Nigeria to exercise restraint in reacting to the Christmas Day bombing of the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madallah, Niger State.



TARG argued that the outbursts of the CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, on the incident could aggravate the current state of insecurity in the country.

Oritsejafor had reportedly told President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday that Christians would defend themselves since the Federal Government could no longer guarantee their security.

But the group in a statement by its National Coordinator, Prof. Ibrahim Malumfashi, stressed that, "the Madalla attack has been variously condemned by all and sundry, including the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Jama’tu Nasir Islam and prominent Islamic clerics and Christian clergymen."

Malumfashi therefore condemned the Christmas Day bombings in Madalla and Jos, describing the two incidents as "barbaric and has no place in a civilised society, more so for a group which claims to be killing in the name of Islam, a religion of peace."

The TARG boss noted that the perpetrators of the bombings "wanted to severe the fragile unity that now exists between Muslims and Christians in the country and particularly in the north."

He added, "Owing to the activities of these fringe groups like Boko Haram and the machinations of politicians, the relationship between Muslims and Christians in the north is at best one of mutual suspicion.

"On a day that Christians were to be celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, by a group which purports to be Islamic, was deliberate attempt at provocation and souring an already tenuous relationship."

The group advised the media and public commentators to refrain from interpreting the Christmas Day incidents as an attack on Christians by a Muslim group.

Exactly! They just make oblique statements that are not addressed to boko haram. It was the same thing with the Sultan of Sokoto; maybe they think we are fools.

Oritsejafor spoke d minds of christians out of d deep frustration they all feel.I give d man plenty of kudos bc he actually spoke against d govt lack of action right infront of GEJ,despite his support of d administration;it takes a man of candour wt deep christain values to look a brother in d face& tell him d truth.
