I'm always miffed anytime I hear news like this. For God's sake, it is not the place of govt, in this day and age, to employ a plethora of unproductive hare-brained bozos called "aides", in the name of "employment generation" or "poverty alleviation". Govt should focus on CREATING THE ENABLING ENVIRONMENT for the private sector to generate PRODUCTIVE, SUSTAINABLE jobs. How many times are we gonna repeat this?

As a Deltan, it is particularly disheartening to me because we should be doing so much better. We have ample land for agriculture, we have the potential to generate our own hydro and gas power, we ought to have our own shipping company, a vibrant agro-allied sector, tourism etc. Our inability to allow visionary and credible individuals attain leadership positions, all in the name of politics and zoning, has been our undoing, indeed the country's.

I thank you very much for being one of those few people that have made reasonable contribution. However, we have been hearing that language of enabling environment right from the time of the military to this present day but there has never been an enabling environment. What you are saying can be achieved in a long term but what the youths want is an immediate intervention to take them off the street while the government continues to work on the long term plan.
The agricultural development you talked about was part of the demand of NAUG and the governor has started working on it. For us to have an enabling environment, the presidency must work in collaboration with the state government to ensure constant power supply, establishment of more refineries, activation of the real sector of our economy and strengthen the banking sector to play their role.

While other governors were busy celebrating x mas, Uduaghan was providing safety net and shock absorber for deltans to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy.
He didn't say I will provide buses and boats, he provided them already before the fuel subsidy removal

I dont get it? If the gov.t are deregulating the oil sector then what is thier business with investing in refineries?

I dont get how that works? deregulation yet the govt will continue to pay for the refineries?

None of thier stories add up.

@Queensmith
Don't worry, NNPC will end up like Nitel. When the telecoms sector was deregulated, people thought that Nitel would do better but unfortunately Nitel GSM is no where.

PRESS BRIEFING

OUR POSITION TO THE DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT AND THE OUTCOME OF OUR MEETING WITH THE GOVERNOR OF DELTA STATE

Unemployment has been identified as the major catalyst to all forms violent crimes in Nigeria. It has been observed that the state of mind of an average unemployed youth is to kill, die or make life uncomfortable for others. The situation is aggravated by the widening gap between the rich and the poor. A situation where the poor people go to public places to watch the privileged people in government spending their collective wealth in drinking Champagne of N50,000 per bottle in less than a minute while it is difficult for an unemployed youth to get a job of N18,000 per month is not a good development for Nigeria.
It is pertinent to note that unemployment is the major cause of criminal activities and violent crimes ranging from armed robbery, militancy, kidnapping to terrorism. It is even more disheartening to know that we have the God given natural resources to get out of this quagmire of unemployment that we found ourselves but government at all levels have chosen to ignore this important aspect of governance.
The 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria section 14 sub- sections 2(b) made it very clear that the welfare and security of citizens shall be the primary purpose of government. It is our believe that any government that does not give priority attention to the welfare and security of its citizen has no reason to exist. Giving priority attention to the welfare of citizens is the surest way to ensure security. No amount of armored personnel carrier and police patrol vehicle can ensure security in an environment of poverty and hunger.
OUR POSITION TO THE DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT
Our position to the Delta State government includes but not limited to the following: that

1. The state government should have a yearly budget for youth empowerment and job creation in line with the UNESCO bench mark.
2. The state government should set up a state model of the federal government entrepreneurial development scheme called YOUWIN to train and genuinely establish youths with entrepreneurial ability in the state.
3. The state government should sponsor youths to get international certification such as welding inspection, pump and valve maintenance, under water welding certification, NIIT certification, etc to make our youths more viable for employment into multi-national and oil companies instead of investing N5million each for first class graduates to study any course abroad without bringing anything back to contribute to our national GDP.
4. The state government should set up farm settlement across the state and enact a law that will ensure that all youth coppers posted to Delta State are made to serve in the farm settlement and teach in our schools. This is very necessary because we have observed that one of the reasons for graduate unemployment in the state is that our people are posted to teach in rural areas in other states and after service they come back to join the army of unemployed graduates in the state while coppers from other states are posted to multinational and oil companies operating in the state to serve and a lot of them are retained after service.
5. The state government should upgrade existing technical colleges in the state to international standard where our youths can acquire skills that will make them self reliant and employable. Guidance and counseling section should be strengthened in schools to counsel students on their chosen career which should be well defined at primary school level.
6. The state government should establish a waste recycling plant where waste generated in the state can be converted into wealth. This will not only ensure a clean environment but it will also create jobs and contribute to our national GDP.

THE OUTCOME OF OUR MEETING WITH HIS EXCELLENCY DR. EMMANUEL UDUAGHAN, THE GOVERNOR OF DELTA STATE.
After an exhaustive deliberation between members of the National Association of Unemployed Graduates(NAUG) and the Governor of Delta State, the governor graciously approve the immediate employment of 200 unemployed graduates directly from the street into the Delta State Civil Service in order to reduce the effect of unemployment on the youths. The employment which was distributed among sister organizations whose members are part of us like Project Uduaghan, UGSM and the Believers Council which is the umbrella body of the intellectual community in Delta State, covers members from the 25 Local Government areas that make up Delta State.
His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan also set aside N1billion in the Bank of Industry for youth empowerment and job creation. The governor has also scheduled a meeting between the government, Bank of Industry and the leadership of NAUG where an understanding will be reached on how best the money can be administered practically to productively engage unemployed youths in Delta State.
This is the first time unemployed youths are getting employment directly into the state civil service without the aid of House of Assembly members, commissioners and senators as against the practice in the past where employment slots are shared among house of assembly members, commissioners, senators and party stalwarts to give to their brothers and relatives while those who don’t have brothers in position of authority are made to remain jobless and miserable and in most cases end up as armed robbers and kidnappers.
We want to thank His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Ewetan Uduaghan for breaking the jinx against all odd to give hope to the hopeless youths in Delta State.
To this end therefore, we want to admonish unemployed youths/graduates who are engaged in armed robbery and kidnapping to sheath their sword and take advantage of the opportunities created by the governor in the Bank of Industry. We assure you that no politician will be allowed to highjack the opportunities from the targeted people who are the less privilege youths roaming the street as we are going to be directly involved in the process. We are in the street as well and we know how difficult it is to be in the street without support from anywhere.
Signed:
Comrade Ovie O. Sanco
PRO NAUG
